Romans 12:10,17,21,. ; That Florida church that charges ?50 for a reserved seat probably banks on the desire of folks generally to prove the possession of $50. We'll wager it's a success. The only way La Grande can get aloiig another year without taking some steps toward better street lighting is to have congress pass a law making about eighteen hours of daylight the-year 'round for this part of Oregon. That' would make the present necessity a little less apparent. We can't suy confidently- about Oregon, but we know some states that .would consider it a great gond fortune to have a governor and legislature pulling in such distinctly opposite directions. Had they been so blessed, a great many unnecessary laws would have died for the want o; an executive signature. And by that we .do not vish Ic convey the impression that all bills passed and afl bill! vetoed are unworthy. It is, however, almost as disastrous ;to have too many bills got through the mill successful! i:ts it' is to have not enough. tc j , TREES ON THE HIGHWAYS. i Announcement of the Highway Commission's plan (plant trees along the Oregon Trail between La Grande anc Ontario should be received with a great deal of favor. Nc iner method of bcautification of Oregon's wonderful road, could be desired. And the project of the Commission U secure funds for buying remaining natural timber strip: 'along; various highways in the state is equally commend lable;; This plan was outlined before the Chamber of Com mcrce several weeks ago by President Elmer Stoddard Iwho pointed out that only in isolated spots does the high 'way run through beautiful virgin timber great trees thai it will require three hundred ycarj to grow again. Th state should make every effort to preserve this natura ;wooded beauty for our highways while planting new tree1 vhere sagebrush and barren rock have held full sway s'. iinany years. Yesterday In Congress . ! , INHERITANCE TAXATION. - President Coolirijje's recent condemnation of the inlicri lance tax in which he characterized it as socialistict wai undoubtedly a sincere statement- but he, will nut-find i very! large group of so-called "common" people agreeing with) '.him. 'Ihe Observer believes fthat the theory of tlu inheritance tax is just and its practice can be right aim Vet not socialistic in tendency. I Naturally, such a position us Coolidge has taken wil, be applauded by a large group of the very wealthy families of the country. An inheritance tax has been a great in convenience to them and they will be tickled pink to have all vestiges of it removed. Not many tf them (in mi por tion to their numbei) have been caught, by such a tax. but it his proved a great bother to transfer all of one'? wealth and properly to one's heirs just before one dies And .it's especially a bother when you've transferred yotn wealth to escape the tax und then fail to die off as pel schedule. Th rest of us, however, aie more inclined to favoi an inheritance tax not because we have a grudge again:--l the multi-millionaire;- hut because it provides government revenue from a source that cannot be seriously affected by the drain, and it helps slightly in the elimination of the idle, non-productive lich. In some states the inheri tance lax is ioo sevore anu woi ks an injustice on manv heirs while t-ilrit fv,,m others quantities they never mis. Califoima, for example, i:t a poor place for the lii h to dt Of course, they don't adveitise anything except that it's supposed to be a good place to live. The attack on the inheritance tax is similar to th being waged by ollieis on all variety of taxation. Tax questions are always a rource of rontroveisy. We have heard so mueh condemnation the last few years that men tion of any kind of a tax these days effects us much as i red flag effects a bull. And the only solution is in effi cient, economical government that will giadually make newly invented taxation unnecessary as well as unpopular. Certainly President Coolidge is making every effort to attain that end. (By the AHKoduteil I'i'etu;) Senutor Borah, Republican. Iriu ho.. started a fight against congres sional salary Increases.
