When thoi seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou nldo not thyself from thine own flesh? Isaluh 68:7. The Chamber of Commerce Drive How to maintain a chamber of commerce that is active and do away with the cost of the institution is a problem that many cities of La Grande's size have wrestled with for many years. ' Just now there is a campaign on for membership in the local chamber. It has the bucking 0f the board of di rectors and while it increases the amount to be paid by busi ness houses generally, it at the same time provides a bud get for something like $7,000, a portion of which is to lie used to advertise La Grande and Union county. Here tofore, the chamber of commerce as operated merely fur nished sufficient funds to hire a man whose duty it was to meet strangers, maintain an office and arrange for the Tuesday luncheons. To all intents and purposes it meant raising funds to pay office rent, pay a stenographer and pay, a manager whose activities ceased when the luncheon Rndj strangers were taken care of. Kr---.Some believe it is better to have a larger budget and .accomplish more, while others believe that the act of main ,taining a chamber of commerce is but a formality which jail -cities must engage in that their place in the sun may jbe maintained. ) In an eastern city wlfl:?er 3f managerial form of govern-: merit, similar to the one used here is in force, the chamber ;of commerce hti3 been placed in the ci'v hrll with the city --j 1 1 , ynJ f EBEKT ROEUMNS WMT STCM To BSSo CAO TO EST TMe MOP HANDtjE jK Wj. Science and Children This business of soarchinir out fai'ta and unaiiKiiiK tlii'in bo as to develop thcorirs and conclusions from them; tlii.s business of science, in other wordu, has been n Rieat bene- j fit to mankind. . ! UK Sometimes it seems, however, that the scientist jtoos ai little too far in his zeal to carry the torch of reason into' hitherto unexplored areas. There is a realm of familiar ideas and phenomena which, in the opinion of some per sons, olitfht to bo RiyfeKtiardcd against intrusions on the jmrt of this roleiit-imiuirer. , There is, for instance, a vast body i.f childhood Icdiror domain of a therapeutic, nature inli icr.lely devised ivnie djes for nose blcedinir, U ' stubbing, wai l removin;-, and things of that nature, which the scientist can never hope to approach with the resiiect'to which such prescriptions are entitled in view of their ancient origin. These things do not harm, and they furnish infinite delight to the juv enile practitioner. If you have stubbed your toe, the p:iin is nl once eased by rubbing the stubbed toe with a small lump of cobwebs gathered in a barn nnd wadded up con veniently for tho application. To slop nose-bleed you swing around your head a dead rat on a string securely lied to tho tail of the deceased rodent. , '. Of such' is the delightful medical folk-lore of childhood, but what chance does this folk-lore stand against the pa tient but relentless inquiries of a scientist'; , ; , Fify years from now one of the readable items in the Portland aers will be, ."Portland faces a water shorlnjve."
