A question frequently arising In business is "Who pays for the advertising?" t. - . This subject has botm" debated at considerable length by manu facturers, dealers and consumers. And, despite the fact that adver tising has repeatedly been proved to be the soundest Hort of buslneas economy, hero are some people who still regard It i3f an extrava gance. As our experience I believe, typical of mnny other large adver tisers, our findings are likely to be of interest both to the business world and to tho public. 1 lloforo Champion became a largo advertiser we made an ex haustive Investigation of advertis ing and what It meant lo business. What his Investigation revealed led us to make the large expendi tures wo make today in bohulf of our product. Summed up In a few words we found that Xo one pays for advertising. "To put It another way the sav ings In manufacturing, distribu tion and selling costs brought about by tho increased volume of business due to advertising more than cover the sum spent for It. What advertising actually re sults In, when Intelligently applied and whon the manufacturer takes full advantage of his possibilities, is a much belter product at lower cost lo tho consumer, ' with sllll greater -profit to. Ihe dealer be cause of tho grouVj'Volumo of hW sales. , . . This can be enslly shown in our Own Industry. : ; It Is but a few years ugo that u good spark plug 61d -al.-from to-$!.M) a plug not comparable with those of today. It rnrelj lusts more than a few months In a oar. and motorists .'frequently changed spark plugs four and five times a year. Ily building up our enormous production, largely through ag gressive advertising. Champion to day selto for 60 and 75 cents a spark plug so far superior to tho product of but a few years ago that there is absolutely no com parison In quality a saving to tho car owner of 40 to 60 per cent, on each plug, and an actual saving in a year'of several dollars, or scores of millions for the entire list of automobile owners. ' i . In other words, Ihe consumer gets u far superior product at kvs than half the price. t It Is only tho enormous Increase In our business, due parftnlly to advertising, that has mude this great Improvement In quality pos sible. We have actually spent more than 'JI.OUU.OOO in research nnd development work to belter oijr product. Wo have Installed costly machinery Just to Improve Itstuppea ranee. None of theNe IIiIuks could have been done if we bad not built up such a tremendously large busi ness. Advertising ulso makes possible a highly specialized business. V arc able lo devote our entire ener gies to onn thing and. iherefore, engage the best brains ohtuinalftc to make It always better. With the great volume brouKht about by advertising, tho advertis ing cost per unit is no small as to be negligible, anil Is far, more thnn ofTset by the reduction of costs due to the volume. Helling advnn- tauea match the manufaetiring advantages, enabling distribution actually to cost much less. Thus, while tho consumer en joys a much better article at a much lower price, wo make more money. o doe everyone engaged in the distribution of our products distributors', jobbers and dealers The profit per unit Is smaller, but the profit on gross business Is greater because of (he increased volume and more rapid turnover, due lo the advertising. What Is true of our business is also true of practically every line of products which people buy. t Is advertising that has put good motor cars within the reach of almost every family. It Is ad vertising that places on the tables of the entire nation at reasonable cost the foods that ordinarily only the rich could enjoy. It Is adver tising that has inudc possible mod ern clothing of quality for both men und women at reasonable prices. Anyon who will give Ihe matter serious thought will see reudlly that wo live much better than any other people In tbe world iHrgely because advertising has made pos sible the production of both neee- settles and former luiurtes at I prices which everyone tun pay. f And the more you sLndy busi- j ness. tbe more you will bo convln- j ced that no one really pays for ad- i vcrfhdng that It Is absorbed In j the savings bruty,' hi about by (juauttty production, f Parlort Bedroom and Bath (Cdltors Note Tills Is tho first of a series of six articles, each by an authority on beuuty and hygiene.) . .
