EtHlEt.e TEm rju-ew-c Editorials From Over the Nation Round and 'Round They Go The Jlullnomah Indians lire groat in politics. We say "Jndiuns", because jMiiltiiomah i county citizens seem to don their warpaint Uien a ixiliticnl campaign is on. A few years ago John L.Day was elected chairman of the Kcpuhlictui county central committee with little effort. Jle was presumably the political boss of that county. Then came a time when the Day stock dropped away below par anil even his followers figured he was a dead one politically. Hut the wheel turned t around once more and when the county central committee met a few days ago John I,, Day was again elected chairman of the committee. Co lo it, Multnomah, you like your fun, and the rest of the slate looks nn in an interested way. Speed No Longer Desired' . Perhaps you haven't thought of it, but will readily lecognizo the fact that railroads no longer are seokinji to break speed records, said an O.-VV. railroad engineer re cently, and then he continued. It was in 15)03 that the leeord of 112.5 miles an hour spued was established and jit ha) never been eiiunlled. It has never been approached jeveh, and now no effort is being made to that end. No lonier do the fastest trains between New -York 'And Chimin tn.vor.se the distance in IS hours; they tnltt.1 20 for the job, hocauHO it has been found that the longer tune is fast enough and is far safer. The average speed of trains has been increased,' but it has beet, found to bo in the interest of successful operation of railroads to pre--serve near an even rate for all rather than have some ex cessively fast trains, because guarding the safety of such ljtnkes other trains nlower than they otherwise need be. : J Locomotives are larger and stronger than when rec orlls were made and probably could go as fast as anything m the past, but in the interest of safety they aro not let out. The design now in to know not how fast they can go, but how fast will safety permit them to go. The tak ing of chances on speed are loft to other forms of locomo tion. Thus 100 years of experience in railroading has taught thut it does not pay to go, too fast, that there is n mean speed which makes for economy of operation as well As safety. ' , However, .the railway locomotive has ceased to bo a synonym for speed. The airplane has robbed it of the dis tinction. The record of 193 miles an hour for a plane is so far ahead of anything possible on the earth that there are no contestants with the aircraft for the honor of being the speediest vehicle built by man. It may be possible to exceed that record in air travel, though it would seem to be rapid enough to meet the demands of the most ardent speed fiend. Yet it may pmve true that there is a limit in air travel leyond which it is not safe to go and that a mean speed Is fast enough. Moderation in any form of travel is wisest, and it is to be hofed that the examples of the railroads in being satisfied not to attack records already established will be imitated by others, whatever the manner of their vehicle, whose present ambition is to punch holes in the air at a taster rate than has hitherto been done.
