Thirty-six Years, Judge Eiikin, who in sitting on ihc bench while Judge Knowles attends to the mime work "in Astoria, the home of Judge Eakin, is not an entire stranger to La Grande. In.,fact, he started out in life in this valley and thirty-six years ago he was resident of Union, then the county seat of-' linion county. Strange as it. may seem, when Judge Eakin left the Grande Ronde valley thirty-six years ago to 'become a citizen of the moist section of Oregon, he left here with nti grudge and no ill feeling. Vet, this is his first visit since leaving. ( Changes, lots of them, lie would hardly have known 14 Grande, he said, and the valley, while its topography remains familiar, has undergone great improvement dur ing that time. Before the inception of insurance on human liv.es it was generally thought that a man's duly to his wife and children ended with his natural life. Evidence of that thought is found in tho bridegroom's vow to cher ish and care for his wil'e "until death do us part." Today tne majority of men feel that their responsibility to. the family is greater after the death than during tho life of the husband and father. They are meeting the responsi bility with life insurance. : Professor S. S. Ilucbncr, head of the commerce and insurance department of the University of Pennsylvania, Would revise the "until death do us part" phrase of the I nianiage vow to read, "while and after both do live." i It does not swm that a man has done his full duty by his family until he has aired for their worldly wants . for both before and after his death. Life insurance is rela tively a new idea and of only recent general acceptance. Tjic insurance of material things is, however, an old idea.
