A Tribute Of Love
Yesterday was memorial day. In La Grande people spent the
day in meditation and in sorrow for it'lie loss of Mi-. Harding to
the nation. His return from a trip to Alaska marked his last
journey from which no man returns.
The late president's body was interred yesterday but his mem
ory goes on and on into eternity. His wife, his friends, the na
tion and the world did honor to his memoiy yesterday.
For several days o funeral train had proceeded across the con
tinent. Jt was a spectacle not to he forgotten by any living soul.
J'eihaps death came as it did for a purpose. Perhaps America
needed that week of sorrow to arouse the better feelings in men
and women.
One thing must be said it has been many, many years since
people as a whole felt the sorrow caused by Jlr. Harding's death
which goes to show the solidarity of the nation.
The people could not all go to Washington or to Marion to
attend the funeral, hence every community held an appropriate
service.
And today, when wo ponder on the last riles having been said
over a world character; when we think of his body resting in its
grave, we, alotig with others think deeply on tle process of life
and what we have been taught to call death.
Jt is so strange, so mystifying, this mortal change; so unex
pected, in spite of the constant admonitions that man lives in
the midst of death ; so terrifying- in some aspects, so reassuring
in others, but in all so abrupt and profound a change, as of the
opening of an abyss that the mind recoils even when the spirit
holds firm in faith. The lightning's bolt is dilatory compared
with this terrible stroke of fate. One is reminded of the passage
bo often quoted by Lincoln, which was prophetic both of his end
and Harding's
Like a flash of the lightning, a break of the wave
Man passes from life to his home in the grave.
There was no pompous ceremony at the funeral of Warren
G. Harding. Ostentatious trappings, such as the massing of
regiments. and squadrons, the thunder of armor dads, the maneu
vers of winged fleets, and the tramplings of artillery and cavalry
these have been absurd and ridiculous to him, and contrary to
his nature. He would have had such a death as came to him to
breathe his last suddenly, biiefly, without pain, in the presence
of his wife; and he would have asked for a quiet funeral attended'
..by his friends, with burial near the familiar scenes of his old home.
The people of the United States with deep sympathy and re
spect, follow with solicitous care the figure of Mrs. Harding, an
pray that she may bo given strength to bear her loss. She has
von the love of a nation by her wifely goodness, and her unfailing
kindliness, She has been the good angel of a good man, counsel
ing and helping him forward in a career that is crowned with
the unfading laurels of fame and blest by the gratitude of the
nation. Mr. Harding was fortunate in many respects, but in noth
ing war, he so fortunate as in the love and devotion of his wife.
Many an eye weeps for him, but there is added tears for her also;
md then the weeping will cease, for there will be comfort an.!
consolation, somehow, in the thought of this brave, sweet wife
taking courage to do what her husband would have her dr..

It is always a good idea for everybody concerned to know
the facts about anything in which they are interested, and we
feel that our customers should be and are interested in the Light
and Power company which serves them.
We in turn like to have your viewpoint. We want your sug
gestions your criticisms. We would like to have an opportun
ity to explain any phase of our business about which you may
