Buick External Breaking System Extended to 4 Wheels; Special Designed Carburetor; Longer Wheel Base on Sixes; Many Other Notable De velopments. . ii ,, i,,. Introduced to the public i"; the 1!)24 Buick cars, after renewed proof of the unreliability of rumor For months gossip of what Buick would do on August 1st has been prevalent and often solemnly assert ed bv the wiseacres as on "good au thority." Yet -so little of it proves true, and so many complete surpris es characterize these cars, that liuick is to be congratulated on keep ing its secret so well. There is no question that these Buick cars will be hailed as a sub stantial advance in automotive en gineering, but it will be noted at the same time that the new fea tures are developments rather than innovations, evolutionary rather than revolutionary and consistent throughout with those Buick funda mental principles that have endured through 20 years of Buick nmnufuc tu re. With 60 per cent more power claimed for its famous valve-in-head six-cylinder engine, its successful ex ternal brakes extended to four wheels in both Sixes and Fours, a specially designed carburetor that is heralded as a wonder, and literally 'dozens of other improvements, major and minor, Buick proves that its en gineering staff has J,een very much "on the job." The thousands who are certain to see these cars in the leading centers this week and very soon in the showroms of all Buick dealers .will first observe a change in body lines, undoubtedly influenced a degree by recent refinements in foreign design. Thus a more modish appearance, even than the 11123 Buick, has been accomplished by a departure in radi ator and hood contour on botb open and closed bodies. This applies to both the six and four-cylinder models of which there are fourteen body styles. - Kxterior features noted at first glance are the new head lamps, nickeie radiator on the sixes, water tight hood hinge, open hood support, newly designed crown fenders, a mni-e effective weather-proof wind shield strip, operating . instruments conforming in design to the head- er conilort to both Irivpr und pas- sa p-p- ami, coupled with an im- . ntr (IIII1ii,iP- u The finish cptionally fine, even for Buick. and the appointments tinusually complete. Shortly buretor that includes a ainiple dasli adjustment for rconomy reiruritle 1 of weather or kind of gasoline used. The extension to all four wheels of the highly successful ouick ex ternal brakes is u feature that, it is announced, has been in process of development for a period of years and recently subjected to more 'than 150,000 miles of hard and varied road tests. These brakes enable the car to be brought to a standstill much more quickly und smoothly, thus affording an added factor of safety inestimable in its advantages. The (brakes are operated by a liitht pressure on the foot pedul and the mechanism is both simple and in genious. The factory organization K'ves its complete approval to this feature as perfected and in no sense experimental. Another outstanding factor is the improved lubrication of the engine. There are new cup-top push rods and the rocker arms, valve stems and springs, connecting rod ' bear- nngs ure all automatically lubricated. 1 ne foregoing are merely -the high spots" in the 1024 Buick, the minor improvements and refinements of the line being, in the aggregate, scarcely less interesting and epoch al. And through it all basic Buick ideas of construction have iieen rig idly adhered to, amplified parvel ously, but in no instune discarded. Of the fourteen body models of the line, ten are mounted on the six cylinder cliassis and four 'on the four cylinder chassis. Of the six-cylinder 'body' models there are two interesting departures from the 1!I2:I line, a five-passenger Sedan to be known as the "Double Survice," und e. five-passenger Brougham. The former is painted a durable black and the interior is lin ed and upholstered in easily renova ted material. The result is a cur that can be subjected to the rough est usages of business and at the same time quickly adaptable to social purposes. Tho five-passenger Brougham painted in a (brilliant maroon, is a very smart model of the so-called Sport type. It has all the refinements linside and out, that are associated with cars of this character, ibesides many features distinctly its own. The five-passenger touring car and the five-passenger Sedan, fin ished in lustrous black, are dis tinguished by ample room. The seven-passenger touring and seven-passenger Sedan are finished in a beau tiful soft shade of blue. The Sport roadster and Sport touring are doth maroon color. Of the four-cylinder type, the five passenger touring and the two-pas senger roadster are timshed in'i black, the four-passenger Coupe in!.,,,, ,'if.
