Every summer the newspapers have to record the deaths oi a large number of persons who have been struck by bolts from the clouds, and in many cases their negligence contributes to their late. Not withstanding the familiar warning, people will continue to take shelter under trees during thunderstorms, thus forming a part ol the line of electrical discharge. Dr. A. 0. McAdie, professor of meteorology at Harvard, has prepared a list of precautions that should e observed when Jupi ter thunders. He particularly advises against remaining out m the open during a stomi. "Get under cover if possible. If this is not 'practicable, lie down. Don't remain standing." Hut even when indoors there are ways to promote safety from lightning. Pon'J. stand in the doorway of a barn or at a window m proxim i1y, to a chimney. When there are currents of air or winds, Hit lightning: follows to some extent any draft or column of rising air, especially warm air. If you are In a trolley car and a flash conies in,' and burns the fuses with ir roar and blinding flash, sit still. The danger is over, and while you may be frightened, you are not likely to be hurt. p Prof. McAdie's warning concerning the danger of standing near mi open door or window dining an electrical .storm confirms an ancient fear that by many has been held unscientific. Hoys and young men especially are reluctant'to seek sensible cover during a thundersloim lest they be thought cowardly. It is not brave, but foolhardy to take chances when lightning is flashing near. At the same time, children should be trained from earliest years tu control unreasoning dread of thunder and lightning. Now conies ivnadioally different view, set forth by the group of economists in conference with the department of agi iculuire. Itcfeiiing to the movement from the farms to the cities, this report speaks hopelully ol this as likely to increase lulure .demand for foods produced on the faims. The more people there are to feed in the cities, the fewer, people there are on the farms to pro duce that food, the better for the farmer. This is the line of rea soning, and it concerns itself only with the fanner. Along the same line is the recommendation in the report that wheat acreage ii the United States be curtailed this coming autumn. There is no danger, however, of world-wide shortage of prod ucts of the soil if recently compiled statistics can be regarded as (uistworthy. Fully one-half the workers of the world aie now engaged in agiicultuie, according to figures published by the Unit ed States department of agi icultuie. Of all occupied men and boys in 23 leading countries, (51. -I per cent are engaged in agriculture, and of all occupied women and girls, 50.6 per cent follow agricul tural) pursuits. ro In Hi il I deeper, and buy a swim ming vest and pantn. Good Baseball At Home The Maker-Cove game yesterday, resulting in Cove's ictory Ihus lying ihe scoie between three teams, was a good game. It was classy baseball right here at home. After all, w hen the good old national game is played as it has been here this summer, the only difference between these games rut! the big league games is the names of the players. We will all have a lot of fun watching this finish with each of three tied teams trying to bag that pennant.
