When The Thunder Roars
' Several shocking tragedies thus far in the season of thunder
storms have directed public attention to the dantrs of lijrhtnniK.
Every summer the newspapers have to record the deaths oi a large
number of persons who have been struck by bolts from the clouds,
and in many cases their negligence contributes to their late. Not
withstanding the familiar warning, people will continue to take
shelter under trees during thunderstorms, thus forming a part ol
the line of electrical discharge.
Dr. A. 0. McAdie, professor of meteorology at Harvard, has
prepared a list of precautions that should e observed when Jupi
ter thunders. He particularly advises against remaining out m
the open during a stomi. "Get under cover if possible. If this
is not 'practicable, lie down. Don't remain standing." Hut even
when indoors there are ways to promote safety from lightning.

lightning: follows to some extent any draft or column of rising air,

ancient fear that by many has been held unscientific. Hoys and
young men especially are reluctant'to seek sensible cover during
a thundersloim lest they be thought cowardly. It is not brave,
but foolhardy to take chances when lightning is flashing near. At
the same time, children should be trained from earliest years tu
control unreasoning dread of thunder and lightning.

in 23 leading countries, (51. -I per cent are engaged in agriculture,
and of all occupied women and girls, 50.6 per cent follow agricul
tural) pursuits.
