Walter Was Here
.. Walter M. Pierce. Grande Ronde fanner and stock
raiser, came home yesterday for a brief stay. Of late
Waiter has been detained in Salem to fill the office of
governor, and he is filling it. He has had a lot of rows
and scraps, but he seemingly has handled the situation
much as he used to handle his threshing crews when he
.wanted to change employes he changed them and quoted
Lord Byron and Shakespeare while the other fellows did
the cussing. -
Walter does not look much different than he did when
he left us the first of the year to take up his new job of
handling the state of Oregon. Time, there are a few more
lines on his forehead, he has lost some of his hair, his smile
is as raddy as it used to be, but it does not show up quite
so often.
' His welcome to La Grande yesterday was, a most cor
dial one .and while the fatted calf was not killed because
beef is so low priced no one pays any attention to fatted
calves any more, nevertheless, the hearts of all La Grande
people went out to tins old neighbor who is taking a thng
at state politics. '

. We were mindful of the fact that Linn county, Oregon,
produces a lot of good things. Soil products of that coun
ty are wonderful, scenic beauty is excellent, citizenship
is of high order, and then, too, there is such eminent men
as Senator Sam Garland, ex-Senator Ed Cusick and Mil

the bill and is not believed to be favorable to any kind of
an income tax in Oregon. ,
Who the men are behind the movement will show up as
the campaign proceeds. At present the anti-income tax
people will use efforts to secure the needed number of
bona fide signatures to invoke the referendum. After
that is done than the governor, will use his judgment as to
calling a special election, provision for which was made
in the law that was passed at the last session.
The judgment of those seeking to prevent an income
tax aw is hard to decipher. Income tax laws are coming
in all of the states just as the direct primary came and no
