John 4:21. Christianity Reviving Dr. Mott, head of the national Y. M. C. A., told Portland people a few days ago that there is only one solution of the world's upset condition; that the talk about American intervention in Europe's affairs, and the many other pan aceas offered will fail, as every thing else material has failed to lead Europe out of her troubles. Then he uttered the truth which every right-minded person knows, yet which is so seldom spoken. He said the way to bring the old world to normalcy, the way to settle wars and national troubles, was for a revival of Christianity to begin and a renewal of faith of Jesus Christ to take hold. Following his truthful statement, the Sunday newspa pers carried a syndicated article from J3illy Sunday, ..which, was an interview obtained by "Ma"' Sunday from her hus band, and here are some of the unmistakable trutns tne pulpit orator uttered: "Von riin'l liflflirli' nun uml uoim-n mil of vlfi You rali't purify noddy willinul puHfylNK t In- Incllvliliiiil. May we believe that with such public statements as those from Dr. Mott and Billy Sunday that there is a re-i vival of Christianity? May we not safely conclude that the way to make permanent peace is not through any League-'bf Nations or World'-' Court, or any other man-l made invention ? But, on the other hand, if but the Chris tian spirit can be turned loose among the peoples of the world, are we not sure of harmony instead of discord, of! happiness instead of trouble? His solution is that a pro perty may be incorporated for a given amount and as tirio goes on more capital is stuffed into it, which gives it a le gitimate right to stockholders to issue a stock dividend to absorb that amount which has been added to the original capital. In very rare instances the Pathfinder editor may be correct hut let us respectfully call attention to , the science of bookkeeping, which has developed. since'' the national government passed its income tax laws, it is so now that expert bookkeeping can do a lot of things. It can make a paying property show a loss, can make earnings come just under the last rail before being subjected to an income tax and revive old investments with compound interest, which piles up rapidly against a surplus earned in any one year. If there was not some hook or crook about the stock dividend which would aid the corporation to step by the income tax laws, why are so many following the stock div idend route. Plainly it is another case of the smooth alert, highly educated financiers getting by without pay ing the tax that the law intended they should pay. We hope the Pathfinder editor will awaken to his error because his little publication is bright and usually contains editorial topics that are vitallv interesting and well handled. With Hon. Frank Wilier 1 wing urged for Senator IJooth's place on the highway commission by Sam Garland, a personal friend of air. Ilooth, it would seem that the Eu gene man is in earnest when he insists on giving up the highway work. Senator Sam Garland is one of the most substantial men in Oregon and it is quite possible that Governor Pierce will lie inclined to agree with the senator from Linn. Any man whom Garland gets behind must be capable and worthy for he has a square deal plank in his pei-sonal make-up that would not permit him to recom mend any man for such an important position who was not cajiable of the task. The fact that Sam Garland is a democrat does not make him sufficiently partisan to get behind any man regardless of that man's ability. And be sides, Frank Miller is a republican.
