A Tribute to Physicians.
At the annual meeting of the lied Cross chapter members
in the city hull Tuesdav night -Mrs. Kay T. Collin, social workei
for the l!ed Cross, in reviewing her work, paid a high tribute
to the physicians of La Grande. In speaking of the splendid co
operation given her in every way, Mrs. Catlin enumerated the
county court, the district attorney, the sheriff, the police depart
ment, and then she told how the-physicians never refuse to at
tend lied Cross patients without charge. She dwelt especially
upon the work of all of the physicians in La Grande and Dr. rhy
i t Hot Lake are doing for those in distress and for the ex-soldier.
"No questions are ever asked relative to compensation," said
Mrs. Catlin, "and I have yet to find a physician who has beeir
too busy to take care of lied Cmss work or the service man.
Every undertaking is done with cheerfulness and a heartfelt de
sire to help in the work, and I surely want every member of the
lied Cross chapter to know this. The La Grande hospital has
1-een exceedingly kind in giving reduced rates, many times
scarcely covering the actual cost of semce. and the Hot I-akc
sanatorium is our port in a storm where we are always welcome,
not only to the institution, but to the skill of Dr. I'hy who works
just as diligently and just as hard for one of our patients as foi
any oilier patient in the institution."
These words of Mrs. Catlin should not glide past eople. They
hould stop and consider the work for humanity that is being
rione by these professional men, who without compensation and
without publicity do their part willingly and cheerfully in the
great scheme of life.
A School Row.
A strange state of affairs exists in West Frankfort, 111.,
where the public elementary schools have leen closed since Sep
tember and seem likely to remain so indefinitely as the result
i-f a squabble over a Ixmd issue for teachers' salaries. The
teachers struck when they failed to obtain a raise, and 0.,"iimi chil
dren are idle'.'" ' '" '
There may bo some adequate explanation for such a deadlock,
lut it is difficult to conceive. Its evil influence can baldly Ik
estimated. The break in the regular school routine is the small
est Dart of the damage. Children und their elders aie. assimilat

every child in America to h public school education or its equival
ent and the obligation of every commonwealth to see that it is

Whatever quarrel, political or social, may !e raging around
the schools, it should never te allowed to permeate or interfere
ith their regular operation. A community where such a state
if affairs can develop is in a bad way.
