PAGE FIVE LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER SATURDAY, JUNE 25, 1921 ROAD CONDITIONS IN ' EASTERN OREGON From the Morrow-Gilliam county line to 15 miles easi of Pendleton, excellent graveled roads; the county bridge over the Umatilla river is still closed on account of high water; necessary to take ferry at this point From end of graveled road to hil gard, mountain roud; very rough, but passable. From Hilgard to,. La Grande, road under construction; requires very careful driving; this road between Terry and La Grande will be closed to traffic oil June 28 from 7 a. m., until June 29, 7 a. m. (This date sub ject to change. Will" give due no tice.) (i . La Grande to Hot Lake, pavement and macadam. , Hot Lake to Union, foothill detour road in fair condition; water reced ing in valley road; bad mud holes; road rough and softj grading con struction in progress. Union to Haines, good going. Haines to Baker, excellent ma cadam. Baker to Nelson, fair county road. Nelson to Huntington, road under construction; detour road from Nel son school house to Weatherby .in good shape; two steep hills. Huntington to Ontario, take ferry at Olds (no night service on account of high water), via IVeincr and Pay ette; condition of road fair; from Weiser to Ontario, under construc tion. Ontario south to Nyssa, good. Ontario to Vale, quite rough.. Vale to Ironside, reported good. Vale to iBurns; tourists report this road very bad. ' From Vale to Unity, Unity to Baker, Baker to Prairie City, no re port this week. Baker to Halfway, first 10 miles macadamized; balnncc of way fair. La Grande to Island City, paved. Island City to Wallowa Hill, fair; rough in spots. Wallowa Hill through Wallowa Canyon to Kock Creek, very rough; detour to Smith Hill switchback well mirked; canyon will be open about July I.' End ofv Wallowa Canyon to Wall owa, dry and fairly smooth; route detours; take road to left at head of canyon (hilbidc road); other roads are open at this d"jtc, but river rising and there is danger of temporary bridges going out; drive carefully be tween Wallowa river and Bear creek bridge and at all bridges. I Wallowa to Enterprise, road fair; detour by Pace bridge best rouie to Evans, Lostinc nnd Enterprise; take Wade Gulch and Trout Creek Hill road; road from Wallowa to Lostinc via Miles bridge very rough on ac count of construction; road from iWnllowa to Evans and Lostinc via Alexander bridge closed, bridge washed out. Enterprise to Wallowa Lake, somewhat rough at present; detours well marked. Pendleton to Washington State Line, paved with exception of stretch between Weston and foot of Dry Greek hill; rough detour; this link in the pavement will be open. to traf fic about Jaly 1. " . Pendleton to Pilot Rock, road under construction; rough and dusty; the worst fe-itures of this road can be avoided .by taking detour along eastsside of' Birch Creek.
