HIS
HASSLER KEY
Although rain was fallinc sen
erously Thursday afternoon, Howard
H. Douglass, who holds what is con
sidered a world's record In puUIni;
Ha8Sler shock absorbers on Fords,
came within one minute of equal
ling his record for attaching the
absorbers on a Ford sedan. His
record on sedans, which take the
"double springs, is 23',. minutes,
and he put in a set yesterday In
24 minutes. His record on tour
ing cars, which take single springs.
Is 19 (z minutes.
Douglass has been attaching Has
' sler shock absorbers for fifteen
months and when he attached his
first set It took him a whole day.
He has systematized Oils work so
that every movement he" mskos
counts and he is now travelling
through the country for the manu
facturers In order to teach the me
chanics employed by the company's
agents how to attach the shock ab
sorbeis properly.
Recently, at Bolllnghani, "Wash
ington Douglass broke all his pre
vious records and - won a prize vX
1600 offered by his company to any
mechanic vvho could put a set' of
springs on a. touring car In less
than twenty . minutes. So far. as Is'
known, he is the only man over
making cuch a record. -j
He spont yesterday at the Hilton j
garage, where he put the absorbrers '
on a number of cars and gave tho
mechanics some pointers on how to
do. the work In the host manner.;
The public demonstration was giv
en at the corner of Depot and Ad
ams avenue and. attracted much at
tention. In speaking of his work, Doug-',
lass said: "I knew nothing what
ever about Hiissiera when I came
out of the army and It took me a '
whole (ftiy to Install thG first set
of springs. This was fifteen, months
ago Now for nine months I have i
been sent . out by the factory to !
demonstrate the proper methods of.
' installing these sprlgs, visiting on-
ly.. the largest western towns. We
had no Intention whatever of put
ting on a demonstration in La
Grande or other towns of this size,
working exclusively In the largest
cities, but when Frank Hilton
heard of the service that was being
given 'Has3ler agents In the larger
cities he insisted on fcaWng it here.
, too.
"This work seems to be )uot what
I have been .looking for for a long
time I prefer the work in which I
cxcell. I have a system of my own
for putting the absortieis on the
cars. This I worked out for the
purpose of making every motion
efficient. I have never counted
the number1 of separate motions I
make In doing the work but some
time I expect 'to make a count. The
work is simple. If one knows Just
bow to go about every part of It.
