OUTLIVING THEIR SHOWS
" Portland has outlived her Rose show. It was all right for
a number of years but now the people want a change. And they
will have a change. Roses are fine to look upon and they are
the finest in the world at Portland, but there is not enough
punch in a Rose show to make people want to cling to it year in
and year out.
Pendleton has a Round-Up that everyone predicted would
iiiduuily decay, but the date of decay setting in has not yet
shown up. It probably will, for that is the history of all shows.
Sooner or later the change must come, for humanity demands
...c:.ange.
THE WASHINGTON CARILLON
About the close of the war, when war memorials were being
discussed actively, the suggestion was made for a great bell
towner at Washinsrton. to celebrate peace and the sacrifices
made to obtain it. For a time nothing was heard of the project.
Now jt is being revived with more definite plans for its ac
complishment. U The Washington Arts club is enthusiastic for such a
carillon, and has taken steps to bring the idea before the fed
erated club women of America, through their board of directors.
It has been suggested that if the women do take the matter up,
the bell tower might be erected as part of a great building to
serve as their national headquarters.
The carillon as proposed will consist of 54 bells, one for each
state and for the District of Columbia, Alaska, Rorto Rico, Cuba
and the Philippines. A noted carillon player of Europe will be
asked to come to this country to play the bells and give lessons
in the art. The bells will be cast from captured war material,
which Congress will bo asked to donate. Such a request would
undoubtedly bo granted.
The project would be expensive, but there would probably be
no trouble about raising the money. Such a memorial would
be a noble and inspiring thing. Speaking out across the city
of Washington every day with its silver tongues, it would be a
marvelous reminder to all who heard it of the blessings of peace
and the heroes who made them possible. It would be also a
fitting addition to that proud and beautiful city.
