Famine Predicted Present Shortage of 700,000 Cars in the United States Shown by Government Figures By GALLOWAY REES CO. The entire world will not lie able to prodiii'u enough automobiles to sup ply the demand this year. ' t $..54 On I)i!c. .'11, 1918, it was esiirnattd (bat there were only 5,5 15 finished ears in the hands of automobile maniilai-lnn-i's. This represents only three days' normal production three days' normal sales. The market literally has been drained by ihe first, wave of the constantly increasing tide of prosperity which -is now sweeping over the country. The i-ituatLon, already acute in many cities, is bound to grow woi-se this spring. Owing to the relatively small production the last two years there is a short age of 700,000 automobiles in the Tinted States at the present time, according to government figures. In 1!)18, the total production ol' cars was 1,01 1,751 as against 1,7:17, 151 the previous year. In !)!( the production was 1, l!C!,(!17. So last year's produc tion wasthe smallest since 1!)I5. Normally, the output increases at tl(c rate of 10 pec cent a year. Had this rate prevailed last year the output Would have been two and three-quarters of 'a million cars, or more than double what it actually, was. In 1915 and 1910 there were aluim increases of 50 and 80 per cent, re spectively, but in 1917 the increase dri pped to. 17 per cent. So there is an ap parent shortage at the present t hue of 700.(1011 cars, being the difference be tween actual production and what il Wuld have been under the normal 10 per cent increase-. . ' liccause of tlie slowness of'the rclui'U to normal production it is estimated that the output of cji-is in 1919 will In- about half of the three' million which Would be net ded'to make up this sliol l.,ge. The growth of the automobile Imsjnos has been one of the marvels of modv n il times. In 1909.otilv- l JI.Siil curs V.i'rc produced. In 1917 the production bail increased,lo 1.7:S7,000. 'The total ci'pital invested is '297,01 !U,(K 10, which is three times as large as the out"laud!ug stock of the entire Standard Oil rroiip of thirty-five (Kii.npaiiies and e;i i cdcil the capital of all the national banks at the end of 191ii.
