Future. (Continued from Thursday) Delaware Rarilan Canal. . Tho Delaware1 & Riitan Canal, connecting the Delaware River with ' New York Harbor, from 1913 up to , the present year suffered a steady decrease in business. In 1D17, 272, 734 tons of.freight were moved. The limited draft of wutor and small lock structures prevented profitable trans portation operation .on this waterway. It became evident last spring that there would be a marked decrease in the use of cunal for transportation of coal, due to the fact thut coal wns to be -shipped via othe r routes, but there was an unusual demnnd for the transportation of miscellaneous freiftht between New York and Phil adelphia by this route. The canal has for many years been under lease to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company nnd came under federal control as : part of its transpoi-tation system. In July the New York Jersey Canal sec tion took charge of tho floating pow er equipment of the Railroad Admin istration on the car.ul and December 1st the operation and maintenance ot the canal wns transferred to that sec- jtleily every Important railroad had 'Its owu speclfiratio-.is for cars and ' eiiKii.es.
