The statement that the President has indicated a willingness to make peace by negotia tion, is not supported by any act or word of the President. It is true that in his exchange of notes with Ger many there was more or less concern among the people that he might con cede her a peace made around a coun cil table, "instead of sentence from court," but that concern was created ly the minority in congress led by Sei.rtor Lodge, in unwarranted and unfounded criticisms of the President. The pretense that Tuft and Roosevelt approach thiB subject as Amrlcans only, Is a sham as transparent as day. Thjy approach it as partisans only. The charge that the President has drawn party lines strictly, from the first, in the prosecution of the war is so blatantly false as to deceive no one. In mobilizing the man power and ma . tcrial resources of the country for the purposes of the war he has appointed to offices of trust and confidence hundreds and thousands of the most prominent Republicans of the country. Hughes, Root, Schwab, Ryan, Hoover, Garfield and Aitehison, are only a few of his Republican appointments to nation-wide duties. Jn this state we may name Ayer, Houser, Wilcox, Newell, Wentworth, McCourt, Bur gard, Corbett, Griffith, Carey and Metschan. All of these men are rock ribbed, dyed in the wool Republicans, appointed by the President to aid him in the prosecution of the war. Even in out own county and city most of the oificers appointed to war wort: officeB are republicans. We must not forget that but for the financial legislation and the legisla tion which has enabled the President to mobilize in support of the war, the capital and labor of the country, which the President almost forced con gress to enact, this war could not have been financed, and labor and capital iliko brought to its support as they have been. Neither must we, the fath ers, mothers, brothers and Bisters of the boys at the front forget what the President has done and is still doing for those boys for their protection, comfort, health and well being. They were nut sent to the front until they were thoroughly well-drilled and equipped to meet the conditions of modern warfare. They are supported there by e-ry ounce of energy of the President barked up by the American peoplo. Ihef are fed and clothed bet ter lhar. n' y army was ever fed and clothed. They do not have to subsist upon embalmed, poisoned beef, as our boys did in the war with Spain under a Republican administration.
