THE GROUSE LAW. , It is to the credit of tho sportsmen 'of Union county that there are ex tremely few violations of the grouse luw, or any other hunting laws. To morrow morning tho sportsmen may shoot grouse to a limited number of . course, and on. the whole the sports men huvo been obediently waiting for the legal date. Of course, in some in stances, there have been isolated vio- lotions violations that are hard to ' reach.. - ; " -:-' .' It has not always been so. Several reuaons contribute to Improved con ditions. Vigilance of the game war dens is a mighty factor, but he can be in only one place at a time. Still another contributing cause is the feet that the Wing. Fin & Fleetfoot club has bent its energies to enforcing tho law, through its widespread member ship. Not only are tho big majority of organized sportsmen hewing true t' the law, but their influence retards' pre-season hunting by men and boys who are not members. . In a large measure the improved protection giv en to game in this county comes back tn the credit of the Wing, Fin St Fleetfoot club. ' ARMIES COME TO SLOWER PACE. Germans have managed to slow dewn the allied offensive. That is to be expected. It is beyond the reulnvof feasibility to bolster one's hopes to the point of expecting the nllied armies to go on to Berlin, without setbacks and halts. There are thankless jobs in this world but few positions of public trust approach the responsibility, obscurity and lack of public appreciation that falls to the lot of the average school director. His work proceeds quietly, and he seldom gains that more or less generally sought reward, publicity;! yet always and over the director must give his timo and attention to the. affairs of the school. The parenthood of America has ac quired the habit of throwing school cares upon the shoulders of the direc tors. Most people are free to criticise and pick flaws if things do not go to suit them, yet seldom, if ever offei counsel to the members or help to re lieve their burdens or even to pass a word of praise when praise is due. The tendency is wholly the othe.. way. Night after night, day aftei day, hour after hour, the director must give his time anil attention without cash remuneration, being recompensed only by that inward sense of gratifi cation of having done something to ward 'the promulgation of the com munity's offnlrs. Here's to the schoo' director! No nobler feeling than this, of ad miration for one higher than himself, dwells lu the hreust of man.
