It is practical "ideas," carried ' into execution, that makes a man valuable to himself and to society." UP AGAINST IT! When tlic out-of-town interests get up aeninst the eommu.-.,a which has in (mira tion all that is -meant by the word co-operation, then there is no alternative other I'um to pass it by. That men and women living and working in the same community .cf'uso to co-operate is one of the riddles of this a ere. It is the co-onerative effort that brines everlasting good. " Ask yourself this question, "Am I doing anything that is keeping back the growth of my community?" "Am I leaving anything undone to -advance the growth?" With this spirit we can co-operate, and rightly directed co-operation is the great corrector of all community evils. . i NEARLY DIED IN TRUNK tittle Girl Was Hidden There by Play mates to Prevent Whipping. Sadlo, the five-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Topper of York l'n., nearly lost hor life from suf focation when her playmates, to pre vent her from being whipped by her mother, placed lu-r In n trunk on the second floor of the himio of Mrs. Dlehl. Sadie, Mildred Dlehl and Iteutrlce Uookmyer, were in the Topper yard helping themselves to peaches when Mrs. Topper returned home. Sadlo became scared and the eliilr dren placed her In a trunk, covering her with a blanket mid closing the lid. When discovered three hours later the child was unconscious. SAFETY FIRST It is important for all of us to caution our fellow workman with strict observance of safety suggestions as it is for the public in general to keep them ever upper : most in our minds. It may serve to save a life, or at least the painful experience of a lesser injury which might terminate in a permanent disability. The surest protection against injury to everybody is to keep our minds continually on the job in hand and watch our steps. Telephone Service is Cheapest Service ( on Earth . His Lecture Notes. T. I'hy. Not be ing a married man I was not encumb ered with any excess baggage and I want to say that I enjoyed my stay Immensely. Hot Lake is sure some delightful place and I don't wonder that so many people go there and when tho new road is built to Hot Lake, and Dr. I'hy puts In his golf links you will see fat men like Joe Cnrr walking over the links, ath letes like Jay Vanlluren chasing pIllB over tho green and Larry Larl son looking like a million dollars In up-to-date golf togs. I under stand that Al Andrews has already ordered a consignment of knee trous ers for tho boys. But what 1 start ed to say was this: I got my mall, opened all my bills, tore them up and, like Kthel llarryniore In her play, said, ' Thoie, thank my stars, those are paid." and al:ed the boss If I could have a typewriter and write something for the community page. CO-OPEKATION The man who took the word "operation" and set "co" in front of it took the common clay of work and breathed soul into it. Look around with understanding and you will see that Co-operation is but another and a bettor way of spelling "Life." Co-operation is at once the name and doFinilioii of a power almost as limitless as space, tho. secret of exist ence, the secret of success. Whore Co-operation is suspended, nature is but cold stone. A business without Co-op'-mMon is soon stone broke. A modern business' is like a co .n-it.,-,1 ,teoo of ma chinery the smallest cog must c ,. -...to or (juickly be replaced. He who compares life to a game of poker mako .1 bad -...Lstako. No man can play a lone hand and win in the game of life. Notice! You will find the surest path of progress, the shortest out to success, is the fullest co-operation with those with whom you work. It is a fact tliat Union and Wallowa counties and omr enterprising citizens have, gone over the top on every proposition, and they have been inspired and led by our boys and girls who have gone to tho front. Tin; splendid record of Union and Wallowa (and every city, townvyil lage and cross roads has made good) shows the benefits of organization and team work. The country called. The men and women, boys and girls answered. They forgot religion, race, color, polities and worked together, hound . by a common cause.
