(Reviewed by Louln Hooves IlarrlBon In Moving Picture World.) As a pIiotoilrnnin"Tom Sawyer" la bound to arousa high expectations and It la on that vory account no easy proposition, but the screen ver sion has been conHtructed with skill; the handling Is In fine harmony with the mood of the story, exquisite In soma of Its dotails, and Jack Pick ford responds to his opportunities so creditably that ho completely won a largo audience at the Strand (Now Vork) by IiIb performance. This is faying a great deal when It Is con sidered that a very largo number of people in the average audience are familiar "with t)uf rYnciplo" scenes In tho story and have formulated some preconceived Ideas of tho'lr own as to how It should be proscnted. Boy life In tho mlddlo of the last century was fresh In tho thoughts and sympathies of Murk Twain when ho wrote the story of Tom Sawyor and old boys of today keenly appro data the truthfulness of his portrait ure. Uesldes this thore is much that Is still representative of that period in a boy's life of today, though tlmos have greatly changed. Tom Sawyer will, ncvertholoss, long remain a classic, endeared to our hearts be causo of the author's kindly soul re vealed therein. Tho atmosphere of the story Is most perfectly preserved In the scenes depicting tha gathering of townspeople at the meeting house. The solection of church and street; the care shown In costumes nnd the absence of theatrical exaggeration completes a delightful lMn-lon. We are not looking at a sri.vii :.tnry, wo are transported to the tiine and place of an net mil cxperlenco and nre par ticipants In tho events. Besides fidelity and good tnslo in settings and exteriors, tho director has added greatly to the general sum of values by amusing bits of psychology among the various types. Tho types have been well-chosea an n rule and Jack Pirkford carries his difficult role by sheer force of personality. He rivals the bright sub titles in provoking laughtor and is conscientious In every moment of his; Impersonation. It Is true that in terost centers entirely on the char acterisation of tho lead, relegating the balance of nn oxcellent cast to the background but his chance fci error are corespondlngly great, and he sails serenely through them all The entire production will prove p big winner whercvor shown and give satisfaction to those who look for u rovlvul of Interest in what haB comt' to bo'nn American classic.
