In fuct, this photoplay In ! "very much Fairbanks," so to speak, ! for he wrote It, enacted It principal charactor and evon directed several scones himnelf wlicn rM r duties In connection with the production of tho film called Director John Emer son away. In addition to Its other merits, "Down to Earth" 1b undoubtedly the most lavishly staged photoplay In which tho popular Fairbanks' has erer appeared. The film shows the many different locales visited by a happy young man whoso "wandor lust" and "closo-to-nature" Ideas not only afford him the real pleasures of life but at the same time nro the means of spreading health and sun shine wherever ho noes. The theme Is typical of the true Fairbanks nnt u ro and in addition to ii.-t mirth-provoking qualities carries with it tho woll-known optimism and philosophy of the famous screen star, proving in all one of the greatest screen tonics cvor presented. On the same program will be an other of the famous Lonesome Luke comedies. It Is urged that ns many as poss Iblo animgo to attend tho matinees as no doubt large crowds will be on hand In tho evening to sec theso two fun makers. How valuable a thing In a dense of humor Is exemplified In "The Firefly of Tough Luck," a Triangle Western melodrama written by J. 0. Hawkea nnd featuring Alma Ruebena and Walt Whitiuun. The particular circumstances which brint forth this Btateinent arc Illustrative of another profound reflection: It is better to make, tho best of what can't be helped and lo laugh at one's troubles, In place of tumbling Into the doleful dumps. To lo.odi this les son is excuse enough for the exist ence, of any screen drama, even If several of the Incidents of the story are slightly bayond heller. Tho dramatic groundwork of the JY'.d. .Ilawkcs plot calls fur a rare sort of danco hall heroine, who com blneB tho pntlenco nnd devotion of n puritan maiden with the ability lo dance the latest Hawaiian steps whllo wearing tho nativo costume without embnrrasiimenL. The advent m en of these two people In "Tough Luck," which turns out to have but two In habitants, are most entertaining unci full or humor. How u rich gold strike la made, the town boomed. None of the happenings of "The Firefly of Tough Luck" may ever have taken place in real life, but tho picture Is enjoyable and teaches two or three bully mor als besides. Tho production Is excellent, nnd E. Mason Hopper has directed the picture cleverly. A finely balanced cast Is evidence. Almn Itnebens makes 'ono accept tho character of Firefly with almost no mental reser vation, and that is ndvancing consid erable. Walt Whitman's Impersona tion of "Tough Luck" Baxter Is a gem In tho way of character acting, being liberally humorous and per fect In every detail of make-up and action. Charles Gun Is a likeable Danny Ward, nnd Jack Curtia Is en titled to a plnco in the same class, SB Happy Jack Clarke. Darrel Foss and Aaron Edwards are both useful, if not ornamental, mcnibors of the cast. This feature will bo shown at the Star today and tomorrow with a Triangle comedy also on the bill. outdoors bo that rewer story-books are in demand. . 21,561 books were lent during the year for homo use, of which 1261 were unbound magazines. 615 books were purchased and 222 were donated. Most of the dona tions consisted of government or state publications, mostly pamphlets. 210 books wore withdrawn from the shelves, worn out or too soiled for use. Many more should bo with drawn as noon as there Is a prospect of replacing them. There are now 3604 volumes In the library, exclus ive of Oregon Btats publications. Seventy-five perwmt of the adult books circulated wore fiction. 33 per cent of all books lent were child ren's books. 589 new borowcm were registered during the year. Thero are 2638 patronB In good atnndlng; 1. e., who have used the library within two years. Tho mem bers appointed this year were Mr. George T. Cochran, Mr. Elmen Stod dard, Mrs. Stella Ingle, and Mr. C. M. Humphreys. The routine of tho library wns car ried on as usual. A few alight im provements havo beon made in the charging system but the original or ganization of the library was so well done that no radical changed have ever been necessary. La Grande taxpayers are fortunate to escape the usual experience of the small town library, of recataloglng, reorganiz ing, or wholesalo discarding of un suitable books. Among the er.table additions to the book collection are the following purchased during tho year or other wise obtained: Complete Bet rf state teacher's reading circle courpo books, complete set of ?ark Twain, 28 volumes on church and religious work from tho American Sunday School Union, donated; Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Diology, given by Mrs. Turner Oliver; books on music recommended by Miss Cecil Ilindman, supervisor of music in tho public schools; a largo number of booka and pamphlets on food and cooking.
