Metiers from Jhe front The following letter was received from J. E. Waller by Mr. and Mrs. Krouse, of this city: Dear Friends: I suppose you have begun to think I have forgotten you. But ask you to excuse me for not writing as I have been so busy. We are drilling six hours a day and have two hours lecture in the afternoon on first aid work. I like the first aid work much better than the military drilling. Secretary Baker, of the War Department, was out here today and the whole Rainbow division was pass ed in review, iney always have one of those review marches before they send any troops away. I dont know just when we will leave. But think it will be about a month. I like this' camp much better than the one at Clackamas. It is fixed very conveni ent. They have built 15 barracks since we came. And are still putting up more of them. They are planning on bringing some of the drafted men to this camp when the Rainbow divis ion leave here. They are going to give all of us another examination before we go across. They say it is a very strict examination, but I don't think there will any of the boys fail out of ou- bunch. The people of the East .hink the boys of the West are just about right. It seems funny to see the onmhinntinn Vinriiot aVinna thou Vinvo , WW Wo TW oll o-m.rio,. m,..,t nH nil bin,). f Hn.mr. ht n. t fellows are allowed to buy a glass of L?er. I was down to Freeport yester day. T"t. is a -".all town just four miles from our camp. A bunch of us boys hired a motor at the bcuch and went out to catch some whale, but all we caught was one small flounder. When we felt him biting wo thought it was a whale. But found out it was a big mistake. Ha! .Hal I guess I have written enough nonsense for nna time. Will close as it s about lunch time. Hoping to hear from you soon. Best regards and good wishes to all of you, and I thank you many times for the lunch you gave us boys. I remain as ever, 3( E. WALLER. The following letter was received by The Observer from Sidney Huppers ett: Camp Mills, L. I., N. Y., Sept. 23, 1917. Dear Sir: This morning wo were in a grand review before Secre tary of War Baker before whom the whole Rainbow Division passed in re view. The Hospitals were on the end of the column and we had a long time to wait while all the other companies passed before we fell in st the rear. The Hospitals arc always supposed to be benmd the rest of the Army and as much out of the way as possible. The Southern troops do not come up to the Western troops. The men seem to be of a poorer type and they do not keep their uniforms as clean as thny might with a little effort and care. Last Saturday evening and Sunday I was in New York City seeing the town and had my first view of tho Atlantic Ocean at Coney Island, whic.i is quite a place nnd there was such a crowd that they had a row of police men down the sidewalks to keep tho crowd separated, which was going each way and to try and keep them divided. Sunday I went out to Central Park. It is quite a place. It is only about 150 blocks long or more. Tkrt fnllmi.B ilnii' .n.fl en voru miirh for New York City as they appointed in it and 1 nm rather that way, iod, While they have lots of fine big buildings they have plenty of old onus and of the poorer class ns soon as you ret off the main streets, and even on Broadway they were tearing big holes in the pavement to plant more sun- j wavs or wires as all the telephone, wires are under eround. Last week they issued us our trench shoes which are a heavy, hob-nailed shoe with the smooth side of tho hide turned in. A fellow feels like a lumberja-k when he goes down the road. They also issued us our belts and knapsacks and the poles for our shelt er tents. We carry our first aid DOINGS OF THE DUFFS DO VOO IT3 AURIGHT 60T RIGHT IN krtlTTINc ! Pockets (III! iT" I 1 I 1' lit equipment of bandages and first aii I stuff in the pockets that run all around it. There is a hutehet attach ed to tho belt and so far it is the only weapon of any sort that has been is sued to us, though we are allowed to carry either revolvers or rifles if they think it is necessary, though it will be a long time yet before we will be any. where we will need them, even -if we should go over right away. There is plenty of talk that we may go over within a week or ten days, but there is nothing official. . Last night as I came out of theY. M. C, A. in Hcmpsteud, who should step up to me and grab my hand but Ernest Vehrs, who came to see his brother and could not find him, so I brought him out to camp with me and the boys made room for him to sleep and he stayed with us all night and left this morning for Philadelphia where he is going to school this Win. ter. Anybody from Oregon is sure of a welcome with us here, and we are al ways glad when they look us up. Yours truly, . SIDNEY C. HAPPERSETT. RECORD BREAKING CROP FOR SOUTH AMERICA. (United Press.) Buenos Aires, Aug. 25. (By Mail.) Reviewing the crop situation for the current season, .the Buenos Aires Standard draws the conclusion that the republic seems likely to have a recoril breaking yield, but it questions whether this will do the country much good under existing eircun'- 1 stances. "The outlook would be most , encouraging," says the Standard, "if we u,d c?untt uan lighter, to car- ry the grain to 'hungry Europe, "But will Europe be hungry enough to purchase Argentine's grain in bulk? That will depend upon what the allies think will be Argentine's po sition politically when tho harvest is gathered. They are making every ef fort now to so harmonize their pooled produce as to make purchases from neutrals ns light as possible, not bo cause neutrality is a crime to he punished, but a policy that will not on encouraged. "Freighters will be very scsr.'e when neutrals ask for them to carry their produce to the war-bitten mar kets." SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS' ORGANIZE TRAINING CLASS On Tuesday evening at 7:30 at the Parsonage there will be a special meeting to arrange for a Sunday School teachers' training class. All interested in Bible school work come. ' The teachers' training class is to be a union one, including members of all churches. On Tuesday evenng the .business will be to decide about text books, time of meeting, leader, etc. 10-l-12t. H. L. FORD, Pastor.
