' whole character of the war on the western front should change com pletely, it is entirely possible that American cavalry may undergo the same experience. The change in the nr that mm when the Germans dug themselves in on trench soil rendered it necessary for a large number of the French cav alry regj'ment to be dismounted and the men utilized in the foot service. Enough of the cavalry was retained to meet any requirements that may yet come with a .reversal to onen war fare, but the wisdom of thn chancre, has been demonstrated by the fact ihat since then the French cavalry that still continues as such has only had two occasions to get into action. Dur ing the first few days of the Battle of the Somme cavalry tmtrnln worn thrown out ahead of the advancing in fantry for a few days, and during the German .retreat of last March the cav r.lry again had a busy week chasing the fleeing Germans. But that has been all. With the whole war on a trench basis, these "cavaliers a pied" or cav alrymen afoot as they are know, took tneir turns in the trenches. A con sistent effort was made to use them where their especial Qualifications and fitness would render the most service. It was quickly found that thev especially valuable for advance Dosta. for sentinel and watchposts service, lor scouting and "couverture" work which resulted l:n a great number of them being used in small groups of one or two platoons. j A notable instance of where just the right kind of a "nook" was found for them was on the Yser. Where the French line riins into the North Sea at Nieuport, Marine Infantry were found to be the most adapted for vn trenches there, as there was all the atmosphere of the sea and marine wariare.
