The large envelope contained the cards of the engaged couple with"the engagement ring attached. She had stopped off for a few days at iBoise where she visited relatives, and after a week or ten days, here she will return to her school. ;, Expects to Receive Commission Dr. C. HT. Upton, who has been in New York City for the past two and one half months, but who re icntly returned to Portland, was in ;own yesterday on a flying business trip He expects to receive h)'s commission in the Medi cal Reserve Corps about the first of September. For the present he is located in Portland awaiting the call to the colors. 'Imperial Hotel Changes Hands Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Daubenberger, of Centralia, who have been visiting Mrs. Daubenberger's cousin, Mrs. A. H. Beebe, have bought the Imperial Ho tel here and will take possession Sep tember 1st. They have been in the i j hotel business for some time having just sold the Wilson Hotel at Centralia prior to their coming here. Will Visit Sister in Kansas Miss Beatrice Wiltsee leaves Thursday for Independence, Kansas, where she will visit her sfster.. He claims to be a Penn sylvania Dutchman, Return From Camping Trip Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Putman returned Mon day from a few days' camp at Wal lowa Luke, having motored over last week. They report a fine trip, al though Mrs. Putman brought back a different voice than what she left with. She went in sw'mming a time or two over there and is now quite hoarse from the effects of the swim. Wigglcsworth-QatchcU Nuptials Mr. Charles B. Gatchell, of Tacoma, Wash., and Miss Myra Wigglesworth of Unon, were married at the homo of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Peterson, 140E Sixth Ave., last evening at six o'clock, Rev. Chas. A. Edwards of the Metho dist church officiating. The bride wore a beautiful creation of white georgette crepe over silk and carried white moss roses. She was attended f;by Ml'ss Mabel Jones as bridesmaid, j who wore a gown of green georgette Icrepe and carried pink carnations.. The groom is also a graduate of O. A. C. and has .accepted a position as manual train ing professor in None of the Tacoma 'schools. Mr. and Mrs. Gatchell left on No. 5 last night for a short honey moon and will be at home to their friends in Tacoma after September 5. . - Home From Hospital J." H. Keeney local agent for the O.-W. R. & N. Co., is home from the hospital where he underwent a minor operation last week. He expects to be hack at work again within a few days. Take Trip Through Yellowstone M'ss Rosa Sherman and her mother- returned today from a two -weeks visit with her brother in Powell, Wy oming. They also went through Yel lowstone Park, and enjoyed the trip immensely. On Way To School Miss Ruth . Woodruff, of Union, stopped over to day for a few hours' visit with Mrs. Walter Kivette en route to Monmouth, Oregon, where she will attend normal school. Pat Likes His Job A leter re ceived this morning from Pat Foley' states that he has , entered the Pre dio training camp and likes it fine. His wife, Who accompanied him down there, has gone on to Santa Cruz to visit a fe wdays with her brother be fore going on to Pennsylvania to be with her people. Auxiliary Meets The auxiliary to mothers, sisters and sweethearts of the Hosroftal Unit, consisting of the boys in La Grande Unit No. 1, met at the home of Mrs. J. E. Foicy yesterday afternoon and evening and made ten gallons of apple butter which is to be placed on board the troop train as it goes through here. Con sidering tho work and good will put into this butter, it ought to no ap predated by the boys, and it will. Will Handle Soldiers Desk at "Y" Private E. S. Evans of Co. L has been detailed by Capt. Stafrin of the com pany, to handle the desk at the Y. M. C. A. for soldiers during the day and until ten at night. He will handle work for all tho soldiers. Sev eral of the ladies have "adopted" some of the motherless boys, have also the 'Honor Guard girls. The boys evidently will not lack for good thiii-.n to eat.' ' Fire Causes Little Damage At a little after nine this morning a fire broke out i'ji K. Ford's bill posting room behind Hill's Department Store. One of the Evening Observer staff discovered the firo and turned in the alarm. 'He rushed back and was joined by Fred J. Holmes, who turned a'"fcarden hose on the fire, and did much to keep the fir? from spreading. When the fire department arrevd they soon put it out by the use of chenv cals, with small damage to the premis es. The dish towels so kindly and so promptly sent us by the Honor Guard were distributed last week and uie greatly appreciated by those fortunate enough to receive them. The boys feel verv trratef ul to the Honor Guaul. Gus Lewin arrived in camp this morning and was speedily examined,- passed, enlisted, vaccinated, etc., mak- ing a total of 81 men now in camp. Frank C. Crippen and Wm. W. Vehrs arrived a day or two ago. Both passed and are now equipped. It has now teen several days since, we were vaccinated and aside from be- l:ng a little touchy on the left side the treatment has mot inconvenienced any of us. None of the hoys are sick and all reported for drill this morn ing, The daily routine of the camp is so arranged that we keep fairly busy, but at that we are not over worked. We fall in at 6 a. m. have a few minutes setting up exercises to start the cir culation, breakfast and drill from 8 till 11. We fall in again at 1:1b and drill until 3. Supper at 6 and re treat at 6. The evenings are devoted to reading, writing, etc. Nearly every evening the Y. M. C. A. has some sort of entertainment which is one of the agreeable features of the camp. "Oregon" tho white bull mascot of the unit is fast mnking himself ac quainted with the whole outfit. Strange as it may seem he has not learned the "Mess call" but at that is keeping up the standard. ' The main question of discussfon is when we will start for New York and what we will find there. . Tho idea of an early departure is perfectably agreeable with the men. Wo hope to 4. 4, 4. 4.
