Carnival Gaining .
In Popularity
The socond night's crowd at the
Great Wortham Shows carnival was
fully twice as large as the night be
fore. All the attractions that were
unable to open were running in full
blast and the crowd seemed to pat
ronize the attractions quite liberally.
It s the biggest and best show of its
kind ever in La Grande. The attrac
tions are all of a high class and not
one show has the least objectionable
feature. The Whip came in for a big
share of the patronage. All other
rides pale into insignificance as com
pared with the Whip. It's great. The
busiest place last night was the Mon
key Speedway, a sort of miniature
"Speed 'Em Up", where little mon
keys were the auto drivers and ent
ered into the spirit of the race much
as human drivers do. One little
monkey called Barney Oldfield is a
show in himself and won nil the races
last night. The Monkey Speedway is
a brand new idea and is proving a big
winner for the Wortham company.
Bernardi's Athletic Show opened to
a good crowd of satisfied patrons.
H. Christenscn, a local wrestler ac
cepted the challenge of Tony Ber-
nardi, tho Italian middle weight cham
pion and stayed with Bcrnardi ten
minutes receiving a dollar a minute.
Bcrnardi claims that he can throw
Christenscn and" offers to go again
in a finish match. Much interest was
evidenced last night and the fans nre
apt to be treated to a good match be
fore tho week is over. A party of lo
cal sports are trying to arrange a
match with our local champion,
O'Neill, and in a tnlk with Bcrnardi
Inst night it is plainly evident that
he would like very much to take
O'Neill on.
The Miracle, a show built of some
what different lines, made good from
the first and the performance . pre
sented is well worth the admission
charged.
In fact there is so much to see that
it will take nt least two nights to sec
it all. .

cial) One man was shr-t to death and
two were seriously injured here early
yesterday when striking cannery
workers attempted to prevent Frank
Enderlin, employed in a cannery cook
room, from working.
Enderlin was stopped by strikers.
One of the men, the police say, lifted
No Labor Shortage.

Early reports of a probable scarcity
of labor among farmers seem to have
been exaggerated, according to re
ports which have been received hy
State Labor Commissioner Hoff from
the secretaries of granges and farm
ers' unions.
Army Units 16,000 Men.
Washington, July 25. (Special)
Secretary Baker confirmed today that,
in pursuance of suggestions growing
out of the conferences of American
Army officers with General Joffre and
Bridges, tactical units of the National
Army will be organized on a basis of
about 16,000 men each, in place of
24,000.
Generals Joffre and Bridges ex
plained that the smaller and more mo
bile division used in European armies
had proved highly satisfactory.
