(By Mail) "Take off the lid and show the people back home what a fierce fight we're up against." Thus a highly-placed American naval of ficer, attaohed to the command of this destroyer squadron, endeavored to say something about a grave situation, without being able to say anything definite. The officers tell plenty in confidence. The correspondents at tached to the American destroyers know that ships have been destroyed by the U-boats in far greater tonnage than at present they can be produced. Other military units are assembling, preparatory to the great mobilization which will take place late in the summer and early next fall. Humboldt River Is A River Of Doubt San Francisco, July 25. (Special! South America's "River of Doubt" has a rival in the Humboldt River in Nevada which comes forward with an entirely new claim tJ distinction. The Humboldt River flows southwesterly through the central portion of Nevada near the line of the Southern Pacific Railroad. This .river is declared to be, in point of size and length, the crookedest river in the world. It is so crooked that sportsmen bring strange tales of fish and game that be come confused in trying to follow the river's course and act as though in toxicated. At one place adjacent to the rail 1 road, between two points two and a j half miles apart, the river's leng'.h is eight miles and by actual count its course is alternately north twenty-five times, cast eighteen times, south thir ty times and west forty-one times; also it may be stated that at thirty three different points .it is within one i hundred and fifty feet or less of 1 itself, the current flowing in opposite j directions by these points. I This "runaway river" crosses the I Southern Pacific tracks 28 times ne cessitating as many bridges costing in aill $634,000. By way of showing how completely "locoed" it is, tha Humboldt ends its course by running into the middle of the desert and corkscrewing its way out of sight in a huge sink. On account of its devious w.'fy this stream is a sportsmnn's paradise. Ducks and geese after following its treacherous course a short distance, become deluded and forget their di rection, returning five and six times to the point at which they were dis turbed. Fish experience the same dif ficulty and become so perplexed that they refuse to swim. The rhdians have discovered this and simply net the fish while they arc dazed. Fred A.
