The Farmer Who Cannot Pay Off His Mortgage Ih Probably a Farmer Who Does Not Head. Hardly less important than for a farmer to take up diversified farming if he would profit most with least hazard, U the necessity of reading. Busi ness men who are interested in the development of the agricultural com munity around them, should not overlook this important point. It is more than likely that the farmer mho cannot pay off his mortgage is a man who has not done much reading. Hud he read but a portion of the existing vast amount of literature pertaining to the conduct of the farm, it is possibly that he nrcht have bettered his condition. Farming, today, is a business. Tho merchant and the banker would no more go from day to day without reading than they would without eating. Hence it is imperative that the agriculturist imitate thorn in this respect. Competition was not keen in the old days, when facilities for trans porting and marketing farm products were poor and most products had to be disposed of near home. There was very little incentive toward extru effort, as no difficulty was encountered in raising produce for homo use, and anything in excess could not be sold to advantage. Yet in these days of modern transportation facilities, local farm products must compete in the world's markets, and the farmer who cannot meet this competition finds it difficult to make a living.
