Wortham Shows
Of 25 Cars Arrives
In La Grande
The Great Wortham Shows' special
train of 25 cars arrived Sunday after
noon and the work of unloading the
paraphernalia attracted the usual
number of small boys and men. The
circus grounds on Fourth street is be
ing' converted into a veritable fairy
land of amusement and the twenty or
more attroctions carried by the co.n
pany. were well in pince as we go to
press. There are so many really good
attractions that it would be haru in
deed, to say which one is the best, but
the management promises that most
of the attractions they offer this sea
son are new and are being presented
for the first time. The Whip, the ab
solute newest riding device, holds the
center position and bids fair to be
the "one best bet."
Another novelty is the Monkey
Auto Races. 1 In this big tent a cir
cular trark is erected and upon the
track live monkeys race in. miniature
autos. These little monkeys are
highly trained and afford no end of
amusement with thoir humanlike en
deavor to win tho races. The Wild
Animal Show . with its performing
lions, bears, etc., is one of the most
pretentious shows ever carried by a
carnival company. Anna Morecroft,
the Water Queen, and her mermaids,
offer a splendid wat3r ehow. Arabian
1 flight,.,-a bi? Oriental spectacle,
Bluey-Bluey, that diminutive Siamese
dwarf, the iBontoc Iggorote savages,
an Athletic Show with a number of
wrestlers who meet all comers, The
Top O' the World, the Miracle, a style
show, the ever present Carry Us All,
and Ferris Wheel, furnishing no end
of fun for the little ones and a host
of other "worth while" attractions
compose the Wortham' offerings for
theweek. . The opening will take place
at 7:30 tonight at which time all at
tractions will be in full running or
der. The two excellent bands of the
company will give street concerts be

Press) A two-cent-n-day "bit" -for
would-be patriots who can't fight, buy
liberty bonds or display posters on
their automobiles urging others to join
the army, was suggested to Senator
Ashurst of Arizona by Daniel T.
Brown of California.
Brown a Lusitania survivor, wrote
from California home for disabled
soldiers of whom he is one:
"Let everybody who can't fight or
buy bonds destroy a new two-cent
stanip eevry day. We're all doing it.
It means $7.30 a year for the govern
ment almost, all clear profit."

tho average yields may be somewhat
higher than his neighbors who have
farmed so carefully and who maintain
it doesn't pay to put in the extra
time, these same neighbors this year

because he usually hits it when an

the prices in the fail of tho unfavor
able season are fairly good and the
thorough man is well paid for the ex
tra time and lubor he has put in dur
ing other, and particularly the previ
ous season. If you do not believe this
statement drive out on the Sand Ridge
and notice Charley Playle's Forty
fold wheat which will be ready to be-
gin harvesting in a week or so. It is
probably the outstanding large field
of winter wheat in the valley. And
why this splendid wheat? Look at the
crop of wheat on the east side of the
road, then take a look at the summer
fallow on the other side of the road
and the question is largely answered.
Early and careful plowing and thor
ough cultivation tell the tale. You
see no weeds, and you will see very

ing most all the weeds that came durr
ing the season and germinating most
of the weed seed in this upper surface.
The crop being drilled in in the fall
without further work and no
weed seed' being brought up from
low, tho present crop is particularly
free of weeds.
It is particularly noticeable that
a lot of summer fallow is being sadly
neglected.. . Considerable areas may
be seen that have been plowed and
never touched with a harrow since.
The ground - is ' hard and dry. No
moisture is being saved and no weed
seeds are being germinated. In the
fall it will probably bo worked some
what and the crop seeded, and next
year the chances are you will have an
unusually weedy crop. By turning up
the soil from underneath that is laden
with weed seed and not germinated,
