La Grande's annual automobile and motorcycle races arc here. Every year these "events show improvement. The management .this year has taken steps to insure in greater degree the comfort of the visitors. The track has been oiled to keep down dust; a screen has been built over the grandstand to protect our guests from the glare of the sun; announcers are provided .to keep the spectators in formed of the progress of the races. This is the way La Grande does things; the comfort and pleasure of the visi tors is our main care and consideration. We like to liaye people come to see us; we court their good will and good opinion. We hope that the Speed 'Em up will help to make firm and fast friends of many people for our city. Un doubtedly it will. To the visitors we extend a cordial welcome. . . . : O THE DRAFT. The names of many were drawn, in the draft, respond in the order called. Many more names They were drawn than will he called from Union County, whose quota is eleven, and from Wallowa County, whose quota is thu teen. The system is a great deal like calling a jurv. The first eleven will appear .and be examined. If thev are found to be exqmpt the, others will bp called, iivithe order drawn. Uie duty or those dratted is to await instruc tions from their local boards which will come in due -course of time. The draft is and has been a matter of intense public interest. ,The United States is to be congratulated upon the fairness in which it has been conducted and the :. admirable temper of those drafted and the people. r , DR. GRAHAM'S APPOINTMENT. The appointment of Dr. J. P. Graham as major in 'com mand of the Oregon Field Hospital Unit No. i, made up largely of La Grande boys and the rest from Eastern Ore gon.is a matter "of congratulation. It illustrates one thmg, The value of all working together for the interest ' of .La Grande. It certainly was to La Grande's interest to have a La Grande physician, in command of their boys. It would not have looked well to have organized a hospital . unft in La Grande and then to have gone to another city toohave secured a commanding officer. Having a com petent man, all put their shoulders to the wheel and worked. The recognition given to La Grande by the ad .iu.tSn general was right and proper and is much appreciated. r in the circle of finance: of Property Under Foreclosure of Miners Liens. La Grande National Bank The Business Man and p The Banker should encourage and The Farmer should practice ,;, Diversified Farming (By Kenneth Gilbert. These articles are reprinted from the "Business Chronicle" of Seattle, Wash., by permission of the publisher. They ap peared in serior form in that publication, Feb. 24 to April 21, 1917. A copy may be hnd by addressing the Union Pacific System.) The Farmer Who Divcrsifes Properly Must Raise Hogs. Along tho line of thought suggested by corn growing, a,s touched upon in tho preceding article, comes tho cheapening of pork production, certainlv j an important factor in successful diversified farming. For the farmer who diversifies properly must raise hogs. ! In raising hogs, there is too wide a variation in the measure of profit. Some hog-raisers make surprising profits; others do not. The fact that good profit is possible warrants the assertion that hog-raisers who are not suc ceeding may, with some slight changes in their methods, turn defeat into victory. Feeding grain to young pigs while on pasture produces the largest meas ure of profit, as it has been amply proved that pasture alone makes growth too slow. If the pig is fed a moderate grain ration every dav while he is on pasture, he will average twice tho daily gain that he would were he on pasture alone. He can be- marketed at ZOO pounds weight at about one half the cost of finishing the shoat that was raised on pasture alone ing the W 1-2 of NW 1-4 of NE 1-4 Sec. 15, Tp. 6 S. R. 36 E. W.
