(Special) On June 22d and 23d commencing at 1:00 a. in. the District Association of Union , County will be held at Cove. Dele gates from every lodge in the county have signified their intention of be ing present which spells success for the undertaking and guarantees a large representative aggregation of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. An in teresting program and picnic dinner lias been arranged for each day and local talent is lending itself to the good of the cause. The greatest treat however, is in store for the home folks who will be privileged to hear ad dresses and musical talent of visit ing delegates of state and county reputation. Among the principal speakers will be an address of wel come by iRev. Chas. H. Powell, Cove; responses of welcome, F. S. Ivanhoe, La Grande; address, Grand Master, G. W. Trefren, Ashland; paper on Odd Fellowship, Mrs. Ida Roberts, Cove; address, Past Grand Master Taylor, Pendleton; address, Past Grand Mas ter Alexander, Pendleton. On the evening of June 22, at 8 o'clock the contest for district prize banner by the Odd Fellows will take place at Macabee Hall, after which a reception will be given by Wild Rose Lodge to all guests at I. O. O. F. Hall. , Saturday evening, June 23, Rcbekah prize degree banner will take place, after wnich a reception will be given by Lodge No. 52 to all guests at I. 0. O. F. Hall. (Specia) In these days of huge war loans and statistics of the high cost of fighting the term "a billion dollars" has be come a common-place to the blase public. When one speaks now of such a trifle as a million dollars he uncon sciously uses the phrase "a mere mil lion." And yet it was not until 1881 that there was in circulation in all the United States so much as one billion dollars. In 1900 it passed the two billion mark and reached three billion in 1908. In 1915, with the coming of war prosperity there were four1 billion : dollars in circulation. Now, accord I ing to the last treasury report on May 1st, there is moving about from hand to hand among our citizens, the neat little sum of $5,415,000,000. This is nearly one-third of the total amount invested in the largest single indus try in the country, the railroads, whose combined securities total $17, 000,000,000. . What is a billiom dollars? , That may seem like a foolish question, yet few persons, even the most intelli gent, can give an answer that means anything concrete to them. An in structor in the international trade and commercial geography class of one of the Wall Street banks attempted an answer the other day by pointing out that a Treasury Department expert can count 4,000 silver dollars an hour and that at that rate it would take him a month of eight hour days to count a million. In other words it would take John D. Rockefeller, after qualifying as an expert, over 30 years to count his for tune. If the money in national cir culation were in silver dollars a relay of experts would have to work nearly GOO years to tally it all. If they had begun counting the capitalization of American railroads on the first Christmas morning in history they'd hardly have the job done yet. Incidentally a million silver dollars : laid edge to edge would make a girdle : nearly around the earth at the equa- I J tor.
