Famous Singer Will Appear in Per
son at Colonial Theatre Tonight.

Richard J. Jose, who will appear at
the Colonial theatre tonight, is
known the world over as America's
foremost contra-tenor. He first
claimed attention when as a1 lad of
10 he was a burly miner of the Ne
vada camp in which he lived, and con
sidered at that time the wildest spot
in America; thrown into a gambling
hall and commanded by the hilarious
e-atherine to sing.
The boy was cold, his sockless feet
were lacerated by his well-worn shoes
nnd hunorer pains gnawed at his little
body as he sang in a sweet plaintive
tone "Silver Threads Among the
Gold." The place was soon hushed in
silence, the roulette wheel stopped,
the clinking of the chips and coins
were silent and from that gathering
of fearless gamblers not a sound
came, while most of them were
actually crying.
iWhen the song was finished and the
tension was at the breaking point,
someone said, "Do you known any
more songs, Bub?" Dick nodded and
started to sing "Nearer My God to
Thee." Men who had not seen the
inside of a church for years removed
their hnts and fell to their knees on
the floor. The boy was forced to
sine this hymn three times. All
gambling was suspended for the
night, and the boy's presence threat
ened to put the place out of business.
They gave him food and offered him
drink. The latter the boy refused,
and un to the present day, with "Sil
ver Threads" above his own brow,
Richard Jose has never known the
taste of liquor in any form.
After the episode in the gambling
house, the news spread about the
camp how the boy's singing stopped
the game and from that moment the
start of Richard J. Jose's career be
gan its ascendency, which resulted in
the world being given the benefit of
hearing the most melodious voice ever
bestowed as a heavenly gift upon
man.
For twenty years or more, Mr. Jose
has been recognized as the world's
greatest contra-tenor. Mothers have
told unto their daughters, fathers un
to their sons, of the sweetness of the
tones of this immortal vocalist.
