" J'S WE RIGHT TO BE(fAPPf 4 F-VI RUPPT JULIAN et&?4 be well .to suggest to those who have not read "A Christmas Carol" that old Srooge (the role played by Mr. Julian) was the world's champion grouch the meanest man in literature. Bob Cratchit, on the contrary, was the world's greatest optimist. Cratchit worked for Scrooge and when Christ mas eve arrived was sent home with a snarl instead of a word of cheer for Scrooge did not believe in the "Christ mas Spirit" and hated the joy and better things of life. How this old "grouch" was changed to the kindliest of souls and brought to a realization of his past meanness and thorough de- testability, forms one of the most beautiful stories ever written and its lesson endures the year 'round, and jw&rM-wlde; for In. every -community there lives a "Scrooge" to this very day. Bluebird has taken advantage of every opportunity to vizunlize the Dickens classic in most effective pho tographic form, and an entertainment both beneficial and wholesome is as sured in presentations of "The Right to Be Happy." University of Washington, Feb. 13 Milk can alone supply all the neces sary materials for growth and repair of the human body, since it contains all of the food principles, writes Pro fessor Fffie I. Raitt, head of the de partment of home economics of the University of Washington, in the Jan uary number of Better Business, a magazine published monthly by the university extension division. Miss Raitt believes that milk should form a part of the diet as long as there is growth. She points out that it has distinct advantages for adult life as well. For the first twenty-five years some milk should be included in each day's diet, she says. "Milk contains protein, tne repair or tissue-forming element," says Miss Raitt. "It is the only food which con tains nitrogen. Carbohydrates, that give its starches and sugars, and the fats, are the fuel foods. They are burned in the body and supply energy, which may be manifested as heat or motion. 1 "The protein is capable of being burned in the samo way. Some of the daily supply of this food element goes for fuel. There rxc also present the inorganic elements necessary to the nutrition of man, controlling as they do the contraction of muscles, main taining neutrality in the blood, and composing the largest part of the framework of the body." Noting that Li Grande fire and police chiefs have issued a challenge to tho vorld as "scattergun" shooters, and that Pendleton officials have ac cepted the challenge, the Bakor Her ald rises to remark that "if it were a contest in proservir.tr the peace and fire fighting the Bnkvr officials would be in the front rank."
