Ellis Clopp, Madera business man, took a trip to Weiser, Idaho, the fore part of last week. He transacted busi ness at the land office in Weiser. W. W. Cryder, forest supervisor, and E. Ilorten, forest ranger, had business here this week, looking over the stock feeding situation. W. H. Briggs has returned to his hmic from Michigan, where he spent about six weeks visiting his father and brother. He says everything here looks pretty good to him compared with Michigan. .Mr. and Mrs. 15. I. Burnett and daughter, Florence, are visiting this week in La Grande and Island City with relatives and friends. John Rogers from up the river is spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. Ward Smith. Paul Hansen, our school teac.ior. and family, went to La Grande- on Saturday of last week, returning on Sunday. Born on December 28 to Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Hagey, a girl. A pleasant social afternoon was spent on Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hagey by the members of Needlecraft. Ralph Sullivan is quite busy these cold days chopping grain for some of his beef cattle which he expects to put on the market in Juno. Chapman editor, gives some legislative committeemen the once over. Included in the article are Bnr rstt, Ashley and W. Al Jones. Senator Barrett of Umatilla is a hard-working student of state expend itures and administration. Ui was formerly a cow-puncher, having ridden the range when a young man in Uma tilla county forty years ago. He was thrifty, and accumulated great wheat ranches, a big general store and a lot of bank stock. He is not a man to he faced lightly, for he always has facts and figures of record, and produces them in his most confounding man ner at the most embarrassing time. He is the "great consolidator" of the legislature, having introduced the main bills for consolidation of state offices. He has a delightful unsuspected strain of humor, in that he secretly enjoys pretending to listen to an argu ment for the expenditure of money, and while the lobbyist pleads tearful ly, the good senator hears not a word. He is just deaf enough to miss all that you want him to hear, and hear all that you would rather he wouldn't He is probably the best-posted mnn on the committee. Fred S. Ashley of Wallowa county, the sixth member of the house ways and means committee, comes in well vouched for by Jay Dobbin, the big sheep man of northeastern Oregon, and Jay is a good judge of men as well as of livestock. Ashley has a quiet exterior and a rosy complexion. He is slow to show what he is made of, and his reserve indicates that there is something to him. W. Al Jones of Marion county is also a livestock rancher of Wallowa county, and is n live one. He ran for the legislature in Marion county, where he was born and grew up, en tirely to get square with Governor Withycombe, who had fired him from the secretaryship of the state fair board. He won the nomination and election, thus vindicating himself to his own satisfaction, and then he and the governor showed there was noth ing small about either, for both are 'cooperating to make a success of the session. Jones loves a scrap, and knows how to hold his own in one. He has a fund ! of information on the state institu tions, both inside and outside of Mar ion county, and is certain to be one of the effective members both of the committee and the house. While he is of the build, proportions, size and appearance of a tailor clad cherub, he is older than he looks. And he can smile while he hits. No recent legislature has had a joint ways and means committee that went to work more promptly and with better promise of efficiency. The ap pointments in both houses are excel lent, viewed from every standpoint, taxpayer and humanitarian, for the committee is well balanced. While the I tightwad element predominates, it is : well that it is so, else the taxpayers of the state might be plunged into ; deeper depths of expense. But no one : with a good cause need fear but that j in some member of the committee he 1 or she will find sympathetic, pains- j taking consideration and a champion if the cause is proved to be worthy. I Let's Have A Fued Funeral. The welfare of the town and of the county cull for a settlement of the li brary controversy on an amicable ba sis if such a solution can be found. The fight has engendered much bitterness on both sides. Thee is plenty of un fairness, suspicion and distrust on the part of all concerned. To the East Oregonian this situation seems need less as it is unfortunate. Pendleton people have too much to do to bothed with profitless fueds. We need our en ergies for constructive forces, not for internal strife and buckerings. Mav the joint committee appointed by the council and the Commercial Club find a way to end the trouble.
