Nance O'Neil, the celebrated stage and screen star, realized the hope and dream of several years when she wac given tho stellar role in "The Iron Woman' a forthcoming Metro won derplay. This five-part feature is a picturizntion made from the novel of the same name by Margaret Deland. Miss O'Neil met the authoress sev eral years ago and talked over the ad visability of making a play from "The Iron Woman." David Belasco became interested in tho matter and prelimin ary arrangements were mad for the dramatization. But Miss O'Neil re ceived an attractive-offer to go into pictures at that time. Since then she has kept tho book in mind and at the 8nrt opportunity she arranged a big production of "The Iron Woman" for the Bcreen. Carl Harbaugh, the well known author-director, produced this feature, and Miss O'Neil is surround ed by an excellent cast. Her first stage appearance was in "The Life of Moses," a light opera, for which she wrote the lyrics and composed the score. Harold Lockwood, the Metro star, has purchased a new 8-cylinder auto in which ne expedites travel in and about Hollywood, California, where the Yorke Film Corporation, his pro during company, is now located. At present Mr. Lockwood and May Al lison, his co-star, are at work on the interior scenes for Big Tremaine, a forthcoming Metro wonderplay. ARC A DE Pauline Federick in Dual Roles. Have you ever said to yourself that you never could see too much of Pauline Frederick, the beautiful Fam ous Players-Paramount star? Well, if you go to the Arcade for the Mon day matinee or the Tuesday per formances you will be able to see her just twice as much as you usually do on the screen, for she is playing two roles at the same time in "Ashes of Embers" in which she is starring. So do not be alarmed if you find yourself seeing double when this Famous Play ers picture flashes on the screen. There is nothing wrong with your optics. 'Ashes of F.mbers" at Arcade Moni'ay, matinee only; Tuesday, matinee and night. "AN INNOCENT MAGDALENE" Artistry Is Keynote of Triangle-Fine Arts Drama. Reviewed by Thomas C. Kennedy in Motography. Artistically, "An Innocent Magda lene" is distinctly worth while. This is something which simply cannot be said about the avcragely good offer ings. "An Innocent Magdalene" is far better than what is accepted as good, and this despite the fact that il contains not a single sensational mel odramatic moment in its entire make up. The story is laid in the South and its plot is simple, quite so. It is the story of a girl whose love for a stranger to her town, wnich is in tact the Universe as far as her opportum ties to reach out are concerned, is all powerful. She is so dominated by this affection that she leaves her aristocratic father who continually boasts of his ancestry and decries n social standard which holds that men are born equal and deserve equal op portunity. The man Dorothy marries is worthy of her love. He proves it when he casts aside his former mode of living, which included gambling on a basis which put him outside the law. Sen tenced to a year in prison, Forbes leaves his little wife with assurance that happiness will be theirs after he returns. During his absence a woman calls upon Dorothy and emphatically states that she is the legal wife. The stunned Dorothy, who is soon to be come a mother, returns to her father's home. He orders her out and she is subject to the insults of the people of the town. Forbes returns to his home and on finding the woman there, tells her that past follies cannot interfere with his happiness now, and advises her return to her husband. He then trnvels to Norwalk and is reunited with Dorothy. The characters, all of them, are deftly drawn. The narrow father, who lives in the past, the gambler and Dorothy in whom the instincts of true womanhood flourish, are strikingly human. It is an appealing story and the treatment is nothing if it is not delicate and artistic. The director himself rose to the occasion and the result is "An Innocent Magdalene," is a picture of rare charm. It is a pic ture which creates and sustains a real and artistic illusion. Lillinn Gish probably never had bet ter opportunities and probably for that very reason never gave such an impressive characterization, and she along with Sam dc Grasse and Spottis woodc Aitken and others in the cast compels admiration. One is tempted to insert words of thanks into the flow of praise her performance in this pic ture honestly merits. Some day pic tures such ns this will be the rule more than the exception. That day cannot come too soon. This delightful picture together with a keystone comedy comes to the Arcade Sunday.
