It is into this camp, which has fori years been run on a wide-open basis, ihat the new mayor, who believes that the institutions representative of re spectability a church', school houss and jail are now necessary, bring3 Philip Pharo, who proves himself to I the very person Panamint needs. Chuckwulla Bill finds Pharo only af ter a thorough search in San Fran cisco. Immediately upon arriving in the camp the parson is of course the objective of an attempt at monopoly by tbe set headed by Absalom Randall and his Bister Arabella. The parson visits the saloon owned by Bud Deming. Chappie, who runs the roulette game, urgej the parson to try his luck und he is so insistent that Philip retorts that he will play Chap pie'fi game if the latter will play his by coming to church next Sunday. It is an ugrcement and the parson has an astounding run of luck. Before h? quits he has won the whole establish ment. Bud is game, he turns the place over to the parson who then decides to run the restaurant, but no drinks are to be served. This episode incites the anger of the hypocrites and they succeed in having the authorities of the church unfrock Philip. This 13 a severe blow to the parson but he harbors no malice and later dies in rescuing the man who injured him from a burning building. This story is a visualization of an old man's account of Panamnt to n friend. Of Panamint no stone remains upon another now, and it lives only in the fond memory of Chuckwalla 'Bill, now an old man. William D. Taylor directed the production, an artistic and effective one in every respect. Winifred Kingston, Howard Davies, Pomeroy Cannon, Colin Chase and Og den Crane are memberj of a praise worthy supporting cast who educates her and marries her. ' VVnen she gets to his home, she learn3 that the memory of his first wife U, held sacred by his children (Violet ! Debit-can, Jane Lee, and Katherme Lee), and they will have notihng to do with her. She decides to leave. As she open3 the door, she finds Mason standing there, waiting for her. Hudson has followed, and ho listens while she tells him the whole story. He allows her to chooBe her own course, and she is about to go away with Mason, whea little Ann, the eldest of the children, comes to her, and takes her hand. "We love you. Don't go,'' she says. Kennedy in Motography. "The Parson of Panamint," the Par amount picture at the Arcade today and tomorrow, is a picture of genuine inipressiveness. If not the best, it is for certain one of the best Pallas pro ductions Paramount hn.s ever offered exhibitors. Dustin Farnum surpasses by a wide margin the general averag" he has struck in his previous appear ances in pictures from tliis studio, and mostly because he has opportunities plus a good story. This is a real ad vantage, since it is always more pleas ant to see a good actor act than a cer tain well known star exploited as such, i "The Parson of Panamint" is a nar i ralive account of a minister who take., j up his duties in a western town of a ( bygone day and it carries the vigor and color characteristic of its author's stories. If "The Parson of Panamint" be accepted as a criterion it is to be hoped that more Peter Ti. Kyne stor ies will find their way to the motion picture screen. Mr. Farnum presents a life-like fig ure as Philip Pharo, the parson who accepts the pastorship of the new church at Pnnamint, a mining town with a citizenship embracing the ele ments which go to make up most every citizenship, only 1:1 a more pro nounced form.
