' vi r,vs p layers- p-7 Thought Irving Couldn't Act Edwin Hootb told one story of Ir ving that revealed a traiiedy In that gifted man's life. One day, as they were sitting In Hoot If a room In the theater, the latter was handed a letter. Irving casually remarked that be rec ognized the handwriting. Booth offer ed it to him and asked him If he cared to read it. Fortunately the English man declined. Mr. Booth opened it and read the following from Mrs. Hen ry Irving: Dear Mr. Booth Can you spare me a box? I should like to have my sons see what good acting Is. During my first season with Booth quite by accident I found myself In a boarding bouse in San Francisco kept by a very sweet, quaint, old English lady who was an aunt of Henry Ir vlng's, and she told me that Mrs. Ir ving had been known to occupy a box at ber husband's performances and ostentatiously read a newspaper dur ing the performance. Edwin M. Royle In Harper's Magazine. Magic Italian Lakes. Every one knows bow beautiful the Italian lakes are and how luxuriant is the vegetation ou their banks. This is due to a large extent to the heat ab sorbed in summer by the water, stored np and given out slowly In cold "weather. A calculation bas been made by a sci entist named VercellL Lie estimates that Lake Como has an area of 130 square kilometers and an average depth of about 4)00 feet In some places the depth is 1 n ice that. During midsummer this mass of wa ter absorbs each bright day an amount of heel equal to that product by lam ing 34,000 tons of coal. This storing op of beat goes on from the end of February until the water reaches its highest temperature in August. From that time on the water gives out heat to the surrounding stones un til spring comes again, so that it is no wonder that this region is a floral para dise. Pittsburgh Press. Science In the Home. Home is the halfway bouse between earth and heaven. As such it needs the practical and the Ideal, both com bined, more thnn any other human in stitution. The earth side of n home must be absolutely practical, and the heaven side must be absolutely ideal If the home is to be a home. There is more need for science In the home than for science anywhere else. Not becnuse science is the most impor tant thing in the home, but because the most neglected thing Is always the most important. The average home is a conglomeration of guesswork, patch work and overwork. The guesswork is the fault of the man, the overwork of the woman, the patchwork of them both. A little science In advance would prevent most of the trouble. Independent SHERRY'S I "The End of the Trail." "Woman in the Case" Stars Pauline Frederick. Beautiful Pauline Frederick has won her greatest reputation as an actress, both on the stne und on the notion picture screen, in tho rolos of women of thu world, ns in "Delia Donna," "The Spider," "Joseph and His Prethrcn," and other great plays in which she has starred, It is, there fore particularly interesting to note that, in the Famous Players' adapta tion of Clyde Fitch's great drama, "The Woman in the Case," which is the Paramount picture at tho Aroniio Friiiuy and Saturday Mi.,s Frederick, though starred in the production, doe? ot play the role of the Woman in which Blanche Walsh scored such a success on the stage, l.ut appear.! as Margaret, the self-saorilicing wife who pits herself against tho Woman in the strugglo to save her husband from the charge of murder. Though tho role of Claire Foster kas always been the stellar one on the stage, tho struggle between the two women is so fierce and they are so evenly matched that they are equally interesting. It was Miss Frederick's ewn suggestion thnt she play Mar garet, despite theatrical tradition, and the change was readily adopted by the producers. Since a little more time is devoted to the development of Mar garet's character in the motion pic ture thnn on the stage, tiie very happy result is a lightening of the tone of the entire production, for she is one of the sweetest and noblest characters r contemporary literature. I .T 1 , , - ' i nave piayeu so many women of the world," declared Miss Frederick in voicing her wish to play Margaret, ! "that I am afraid people will begin to ; think I can do nothing else and that I really must be one of that variety n private life. So I am particularly anxious to piny an entirely different character not to satisfy my own van ity, but to go permanently on record as having the ability to play roles ether than those of the vampire type. I want to slinw nennlo thnt T hni-A other emotions in my system than 1 those of tho worldly sort." The dominant note in "Tho Womnn in the Case" is that of wifely self- ' sacrifice. Margaret Hughes, before mnrrying a very wealthy chap named Julian Kolfe, learns that ho has had an nffnir with Claire Foster but broke with her upon learning thnt he was hy no means the only man in her life. Margaret has been big enough to for give Julian for his folly and when i. mire, in a spirit or revenge induced by Julian's efforts to save a dear friend from her clutches, weaves a net of circumstantial evidence around him and accuses him of murder, the faith ful wife determines to do everything in her power to clear him. There is only one way in which to approach Claire, and thnt is to pose r.s one of her own sort. This she does despite her feeling of repulsion for such things, and after a memorable battle of wits, succeeds in forcing a confession from the woman. In support of Miss Frederick there appear several very well-known play ers, among them Alan nale, Marie Chambers, Paul Cordon, and Clarence tlandysules. The System. First. A toothbrush must be scalded or disinfected with an antiseptic wash and nir dried whenever used: otherwise it will beiume a menace to health. Toothbrushes must not be kept where they nre exposed to dust and dirt: neither should tho brushes used by each member of the family stand in the same receptacle, as the germs of disease may be trans mitted from one brush to nn other. As the majority of diseases find their wny Into the human system through the mouth and nose (and the mouth Is the more common entrance). It Is of the utmost Importance to keep the mouth and teeth xrfeotly clean. If tho teeth are brushed careful ly and the mouth and teeth ring, ed three times a day with noth ing but plain water, a great deal will lie done to keep off sickness.
