Nw York, Oct. 11. Howard Drew,
the wonderful colored sprinter, who
was counted out of participation in all
future athletics a short time ago
when he suffered a stroke of paraly
sis, had a short but brilliant career
before he was stricken. He held the
world's record for the 100-yard dash,
9 3-5 seconds, and many times has
stepped that distance of 9-35 seconds
is accepted as the only legitimate one,
although the record books shows that
Don Kelly once did the distance in
that time. His mark 13 not accepted
as genuine. Drew never lost his
form from the moment of the shot
which started the .race until the finish.
After capturing the Yale champion
ship Drew took part in the eastern
tryouts for the Olympic games, which
were held in the Harvard Stadium,
and won the 100 metres in the record
time of 10 4-5. He went to Stockholm
and won his heat in the 100 metres
event in 11 seconds, and qualified for
the final heat in the second tries. But
he pulled a tendon in doing it and was
forced to drop out of the final dash.
The race was well taken care of, how
ever, for it was won by Ralph Craig
of Detroit, and two other American
runners. Drew left the east more
than two years ago and went to Cali
fornia, where he took up the study of
law at the University of Southern
California. It was whiie taking part
in a western meet that Drew stepped
the 100-yard dash in 9 'J-5. Drew has
had trouble with the tendon in hi3 leg
since it was injured in Stockholm and
in his races last winter in New York,
during which time be look part in
several sprints in armories, running
on hard board floors, the injury was
aggravated. He took part in the
trials for the A. A. U. meets this year
and was beaten by Harry Williams of
Spokane in 9 4-5 seconds. Ho also
again pulled the injured tendon out of
place. Drew was forced out of ath
letics and a few days later word came
that he had been stricken with paralysis.

Aurora, 111., Oct. 5, (I. N. S.) Love
laughed at distance as Miss Lillian
Hayden, a pretty 19-year-old Bavarian
girl, set out yesterday for Alaska,
where she will meet George Huth of
Chicago a banker, at Skagway, to
whom she said she would be married
at an alter built at the foot of snow
topped mountains on the trail to the
gold fields of the Yukon region.
Miss Hayden is a daughter of Mrs.
Lillian Hayden, who is a department
head of the state training school for
girls at Geneva. Miss Hayden and
Mr. Huth's marriage will be the cul
mination of a romance which started
while the two were attending the De
Kalb Normal school.

I Imbler, Oct. 11. (Special). The
imbler school closed last Friday
when it was learned that a girl in
Miss Pearson's room had developed
a case of diphtheria, and thj build
ing was given a formaldehyde bath.
The local diphtheiia scare, however,
has subsided with only one case in
town, the little Masters gir! and she ,
is almost entirely recovered 'Jc case 1
was reported last Thursday evening
and the school was closed Friday
while the rooms were disinfected.
School resumed sessions Monday and
no additional diphtheria cases aie
likely to appear." The only other case
in this vicinity during the year was
one at the Morrison home near
Rhineharts and that wiii several
weeks ago.

prominent resident of Dallas, indicted
by the grand jury for manslaughter
has been arrested by sheriff Orr, and
his bond fixed at $500. Black while
driving an automobile, struck and
killed C. S. Hatch on Main street, Dal
las, a few days ago.

Convention of the Protestant Episco
pal church is the Right Reverend
Iluyshe Wolcott Yeatman-Biggs, Lord
Bishop of Worcester (England). Ha
is here as the representative of the
Church of England. The Bishop has
two sons at the front, one command
ing an armored motor car lent tho
Russian government by Great Britain.
Other famous dignitaries of the
church from all over the United
States and somo from Canada are on
hand. Many prominent laymen are
also attending. The committee which
is to recommend divorce laws more
strict than the present to the conven
tion is composed of five bishops, Ave
priests and five laymen. The report
will say: "Divorce is increasing by
leaps and bounds and it is becoming
increasingly difficult to determine the
innocence of either party to a di
vorce." '
England Favors Gum.
London England chewed 20,000,
000 packages of chewing gum in Au
gust and the habit is growing. Sales
of American gum manufacturers have
increased tremendously each month
since March when only 3,000,000 pack
ages were sold.
