And so a call was issued for a mass
meeting of women at the Sorbonne,.
April 2. Four thousand women re
sponded. It was an audience of the
representative women of France. Gen
eral Malleterre, the only man present
served as chairman. Amid great en
thusiasm the Union of the Women of
France Against Alcohol was formed.
The officers of fourteen leading orga
nizations of French women have
signed an appeal, which is being sent
out to the women of France. It is
a marvelous document issued in be
half of a marvelous movement in
France's 'most critical hour, and has
already become historic. The Chris

Alleged Trouble Maker Deported
Tokio, Sept. 16. Hermann Wohl-
ers, a German resident of Yokohama
for the last 3 years, has just been
deported from this country for trying
to make trouble between the United
States, Japan and Great Britain. He
was given 8 days to get out and he
went quick.
Among other charges against Whol
ers are these: That he wrote charges
against Japan to the American gov
ernment. That he induced an intoxi
cated American marine to pull the
British Union Jack from the wall of
a ballroom where Americans were
celebrating (the 4th of July with
Britishers as guests, for which the
marine was courtmartialed. That he
entered Yokohama Park and loudly
denounced the Russ-Jap pact.

Eleanor, the beautiful daughter of
James Vaughn, a wealthy landowner
is a frequent visitor at the home of
the Widow Crockett. The widow is
supported by her son Davy, who is a
famous Indian fighter, hunter and
trapper. Eleanor often accompanies
Davy when ho goes to inspect his
traps.
One day Eleanor stirs his imagi
nation by rending to him the roman
tic story of Lochinvnr. As she reads
the vision materializes before
Davy's eves and the imDression of
the knightly conduct of this hero'
leads afterwards to a great event in
their lives.
Eleanor and her father go on a visit
to England leaving Col. Royston, a
life-long friend in charge. The Col
onel's only weakness is a fondness for
cards and during their absence he loses
more than he can pay. Hard pressed
he forges the absent Vnughn's name
to a note. Vaughn dies at sea and
Crampton, the holder of the note bo
comes aware of the forgery. By
threats of exposure he coerces Roys
ton into helping his nephew, Neil
Sherry's Announcements.

had a field that made 35

the big palaces and costly homes, the
most pretentious of any in this coun
try, were used as the background for
many of the scones. The story is
one of romance and adventure, and
there is an unusual twist to the fi
nale that will btartlo while it will
please the spectator. A strong sup
porting cast is seen with Mr. Lock
wood and Miss Allison, including Les-

nor. Neil by his polished manner and
flattery wins Eleanor while the bash
ful Crockett loses ground.
Eleanor and Neil ride into the
mountains searching for mistletoe.
They nearly perish in a blizzard and
are attacked by wolves. "Davy Croc
kett'' comes to the rescue and saves
their lives. The true worth of this
great frontiersman and the underly
ing motive of Neil's courtship are im
pressed upon Eleanor by this harrow
ing experience.
Eleanor decides upon a strange
course and in a unique manner shows
"Davy Crockett" her preference for
him. He, recalling the story of
Lochinvar, plans a surprise for the I
visiting guests at the rapidly ap
proaching wedding of Eleanor and
Neil. The appointed day arrives
and the guests are given the thrill of
their lives.
This stirring Paramount picture
featuring the popular hero, Dustin
Farnum, will be shown at the Arcade

GRAIN YIELD FAIR
Results to Wallowa Farmers Likely to
be larger Thnn I,ast Year
While the grain yield of Wallowa
county does not promise to equal
that of last year in quantity or qual
ity, the results in dollars and cents
probably will be greater, declares the
Enterprise Chieftain. Wheat has
been nbovo $1.20 a bushel for more
than a week and many persons count
on it going to $1.50. That will make
a market at high prices for every
kernel of grain the county can spare.
The chief adverse factor this year
is found in the dry weather last
autumn and the backward spring
louowing. farmers did not get in
managed, and there is some good
barley.
Paradise, Lost Prairie, Grouse,
Eden, Promise and the benches of
the Grande Ronde valley report fair
yields, particularly at the lower
levels. On the intermediate benches
30 bushels probably is more like the
figure, and at the top levels there is
wheat that will not run quite that
good. Winter wheat has been put
in already on the lower Paradise
benches, and it stands five inches or
so above the ground, giving a fine
promise of a crop next year.
The hills east of Enterprise had
a more than fair prospect a few
weeks ago, and many fields will
turn out 35 bushels or better, but
the quality may not be of the best
in all cases. However it will be
good enough to command a high
price on the present market. Thresh
ing is just starting there.

The Temperance Movement in France
In a time when the very existence
of the French nation depends upon
the sobriety of its people, it required
a years struggle to win from the
cabinet temperance legislation which
simply forbids the sale of spirituous
drinks and wines containing more
