Dunbar was elected a member of the school board at the special meeting last Friday afternoon, called for the purpose of filling the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of W. R. Roberts. J. F. Vogler foreman of construc tion for the Pacific Fruit Express Co., left on Tuesday for North Powder to rect some buildings at that point. Buck ley, accompanied by other division of ficials came in Monday forenoon for a short stay, inspecting the terminals, and leaving on the Walla Walla lo cal at noon. B. Mid iB. Foreman G. M. King with his gang, has been here several days repairing the irrigation flume and siphon across the river. A carload of dimension lumber for the new bridge across the river has arrived and was unloaded Wednesday near the bridge. B. L. Burroughs of Pendleton is furnishing the lumber for the bridge. George R. Roberts is expecting a car of lumber to arrive within a day or two when work will be commenced on a number of residences he is ar ranging to build for rental purposes. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Meals and Lunches for Recruits. United States Army Recruiting Station. Federal Bldg., La Grande, Oregon, Aug. 9. .Sealed proposals, in triplicate, made out on the form next following, will be received here until 4 o'clock p, m., August 19, 1916, and then opened, for furnishing meals and lunches for the recruiting party, recruits, and applicants for enlistment in the U. S. Army at the above named recruiting station for the period com mencing August 20, 1916. The meals furnished must be sub stantial and of wholesome quality, in suitable proportions of meat (or fish,) bread, vegetables, sugar, coffee, or tea, and the usual seasoning; to be well cooked and satisfactory quantity supplied. In addition to the meals, soap shall be furnished in the jiro portion of one pound to each 75 meals, and matches at the rate of six boxes per .month, without extra charge. The meals and lunches must be neatly served (or lurmsheaj, three times daily, in a clean apart ment with respectable surroundings, not too remote from the station, at such hours as may be designated by the recruiting officer. Each lunch shall consist of substantial and whole some food, sufficient for a man s sus tenance for one meal, but need not in clude coffee. When desired for car rying, the lunches shall be put up in neat and compact form, each separ ately ci as desired. The eovernment reserves the right to reiect any or all proposals, and also the right to terminate the agreement that may be made, at any time upon notice from the recruiting officer to the bidder whose proposal is accepted. For further information relative to the manner of bidding, conditions to be observed, etc., apply to the re cruiting officer. Bidders are invited to oe present at the oneninsr of the proposals. .Envelopes containing proposals should be marked "Proposals for meals and lunches, to be opened Au gust 19, 1916," and addressed to the recruiting officer at the address given above. Wed nesday the 16th day of August, 1916, at the Commission room in the City building in La Grande, Oregon, and hear and determine all objections, re monstrances and claims of grievance of any person interested in such proposed improvement or the proper ty affected thereby and that all ob jections, remonstrances and claims of grievance must be filed in writing with the recorder of the city before the time set for such hearing.
