SPEEDING UP IN THE EARLY DAYS A family of Union recently drove their car from Hood River home in a day. ' One of the fciggest day's travel, outside of railroad conveyance, was along in the Eighties when an imple ment dealer used to drive a team from Walla Walla to La Grande in a day. He came over the mountains by way of'-Summerville. The distance trav eled was about eighty miles. It is as serted that horseback riders in east ern Oregon have traveled as far as a hundred miles in twenty-four hours. Thjt traveling time between Port land;' and Grande Ronde for many years was three days. The first day was occupied in going by boat from Portland up to The Dalles, a trans fA u- n v.- ici uciug uiauc lug mnouGfl vy M small railway which was on the Washington Territory side of the Co lumbia. The boat left Portland at 6 o'clock in the morning and reached The Dalles at about 6 in the evening. The boat passengers stayed over night in The Dalles. Next morning there was a boat up the river to another portage railway of sixteen miles around what is now the Celilo canal; then a boat on up to Umatilla. The trip from Tht! Dalles to Umatilla consumed another day. The fare by boat from Portland to Umatilla .including the short railway transfers, was $10 in gold and $ 11 m silver. From Umatilla the public means of conveyance was bv the old overland stage coaches. The stages connected ' with the boats at Umatilla and Pen dleton was reached early in the morn ing and La Grande was reached the following evening, with five changes of horses. After the railway was completed to The Dalles the traveling time from La Grande to Portland was reduced to two days and that was considered a wonder in the way of speed. Pat tons of the Daily Oregonian in this part of the country could not get their latest telegraphic news until two days after it had Deen printed in Portland. The Daily Oregonian, was ?10 a year, and 10 cents a copy. Times have changed. Twenty-Four Years Ago (From Old Files) Excavations for the Palmor and Caviness buildings were finished this week. F. S.
