Phone Your Orders J ARCADE i man, rather than commit the doubly- grievous sin which confronts her. Portland, Aug. 1. J. W. Akin, sole survivor of the accident that took the lives of six men at the Columbia county rock crusher, six miles from St. Helen3 yesterday morning, was in Portland today and told the story of,ottf .1.:. attempt. 11 was at me mourn oi tne tunnel in which seven cans of black powder had been loaded in a 'TV he said, "juBt a few minutes before the ac cident." Henry Lewis, who was in tihe tun nel with Voss, Winchell and Ham mer, asked me if I would not take the cover off a can of powder that sat 20 feet from the mouth of the tun nel. I started to do as he requested and had just bent over the can wfhen the explosion took place. Fine dirt and rock were thrown all over my back and legs and the ground Bhook so much that it was almost impossible for me to stand. "I turned and saw stones and dirt pouring out of the mouth of the tun nel wiHh as great velocity as if shot from a cannon. When the dust cleared away I went to the mouth of the tunnel. Lewis had been near the edge of the opening, and Keelan was directly at the mouth when I saw them last before the explosion. They were nowhere to be seen. The rock in the tunnel had been caved in and I could not see any traces of the men, who I knew 'had died inside, except a few bits of flesh and scraps of torn clothing. As soon as l couki steady my nerves I found a telephone and called for help from St. Helens. Body Blown Quarter Mile. "Keelan's body was torn in two and found almost a quarter of a mile from the mouth of the tunnel. Young Lewis' body was found torn to pieces 150 feet from the opening. The other men who were inside the 24-foot depth when the explosion occurred could not be found except in small pieces, and this morning not all of the pieces had been recovered and Walking 13 miles backwards over a canyon and mountain trail was the feat accomplished by Milton Biegel of Ashland. The distance was covered in less than six hours and two chums i went along to note the success of the St. Paul to Have Corn Show. Preparations are already being mad for the Fourth Annual Corn show to be held in St. Paul in Novem ber. Over 500- acres are devoted to corn raising in this Willamette valley vicinity. BIG MOMENT FOR BARRISCALE BESSIE Confronted With a Double Sin, She Is Forced to Wreck Her Own Heart On the verge of invading another woman's home because of her love for that woman's husband, Ethel Du- prey finds that the wife she is about to wrong has befriended her in her hour of greatest need.' Here is a situation to try the emo. tional powers of any actress. Bessie Bnrriscale has the role, in the Trian gle-Kay Bee picture, "The Last Act," which will be seen at the Arcade theater tonight only, and her perform ance docs full justice to the unique sit untion the playwright has conceived. As an actress out of work and out of money, Miss Barriscale is seen in the earlier moments of the play, con sidering her hopeless situation while seated on a park bonch. A big hearted woman, passing, notices her and stops to ask if she can be of any assistance. The girl is too proud to accept help, but the woman never theless slips a bill into her purse, un observed. Then Fate does its share. The gift starts the young actress on an upward career, at the height of which the husband of her benefactor falls in love with her. He begs the girl to elope with him, and marry him after he has arranged a divorce. She asks time to decide. In the years between, she has per sistently sought to learn the identity of the woman who befriended her. The wife of her admirer comes, to plead with her to give him up and it is fhe woman she has been seeking. The actress breaks her own heart by writing a note of farewell to tho SHERRY'S Miss HarriRcale is canahlv sun norted bv Clara Williams aa the wife. ; perhaps never will be. and Harry Keenan as the husband. "My idea of tne accident is thus: ! (Lewis had sent for several sticks of j explosive with wMch to set off the black powder. Keelan had just hand ed them to him a few seconds before I heard the explosion. The other men inside were standing around and Lew is had a flashlight, with which the j powder charges are exploded, in his "Battle of Hearts" Brief Summary.
