After an in vestigation of 400 criminal cases, James J. Lind, Cleveland chief of po lice prosecutor, has found out that nine-tenths of all crooks are unmar ried. Two-thirds of the men jailed were between the ages of 21 and 30, according to his figures, available here today. "It seems that conditions in unmarried life tend to make men criminals or that ' persons with crim inal instincts are inclined not to mar ry," concluded Lind after his invest igation. "In 400 cases which passed through my office there was no defi nite economic condition that would re sult in orime. Only about half of the married prisoners had children and many of the married ones were sep arated from their families. As a rule women who take up crime are also single or at least separted from their husbands or families, "This is hard to prove because women prisoners are not inclined to tell Whe truth. When a woman lands in jail she generally claims to be married and says if her husband hears of Iher predicament he will forsake her forever. She also claims to be the mother of several small children, dependent on Iher care all of which nine times out' of ten, is untrue, ilf a married man gets in to trouble he generally commits a real crime, not a misdemeanor. If a mar ried man with children finds his way behind the bars, it is usually money troubles which have placed him there. iBut if any particular class of the hu man family is a menace to the rest, unmarried men are the guilty ones. The way to lessen crime is to advo cate early marriages. What a man needs to keep him out of trouble is a good home environment. Monkey Used In Tests Chicago, 111.,. July 24. A monkey is the latest addition to Chicago's health department equipment. It is to be the subject of infantile paraly sis tests as prescribed by Dr. Simon Flexner of the Rockefeller institute. The monkey is 3 years old and Health Commissioner John Dill Robertson says he has christened it Robert. "We are going to experiment on Robert with the Dr. Flexner infantile paralysis tests," Dr. Robertson said. "Robert will be kept in a cage in the health department and we hope to be enlightened concerning infantile pa ralysis by carefully observing the Flexner tests on the monkey." Dr. Robertson- said that one new case of infantile paralysis was report ed and confirmed during the day. It i3 in the vicinity of West Twelfth and South Haisted streets. With the death of Mildred Borcher, aged 10 years, of Hinckley, De Kalb county, which was reported to the State Board of Health by Dr. C. E. Crawford of Rockford, inspector of the Board, the death toll in Illinois from infantile paralysis totals four. Between 5,000 and 0,000 delegates and hnlf as many visitors are here today for the opening of the three day session of the supreme convention of the Knights of Columbus. Special trains brought vis itors from Chicago and Omaha. Residents of the three cities have raised an entertainment fund of $10, 000 to entertain the visitors. The Iowa Council subscribed $3,000. Some of the most prominent catho lic prelates in the land here. His Excellency Most. Rev. John Bonzano, the Apostolic delegate to the United States, will be celebrant of the solemn Pontifical Mass at Sacred Heart Ca thedral, and will be one of the speak ers at the banquet which will fol low the fourth degree exemplifica tion. Most Rev. James J. Keene, Archbishop of Dubupue, will deliver the sermon at the Pontifical mass. Rt. Rev. James Davis, bishop of Davenport, extended an invitation to every cardinal, archbishop and bishop in America to attend and many have accepted. Among the notable speakers h re are: James A. Flaherty of Philadel phia, supreme knight; John H. Redriin of Denver, supreme master of' the fourth degree; William P. Larkin of New York, supreme director; E. G. Dunn, of Mason City, past state depu ty of Iowa and Hon. M. J. Wade, judge o fthe federal court, southern Inwa district. Recruits Did Not Come Back. Baker, Aug. 1. Captain 10 M. Clark, recruiting officer for the Ore gon National Guard, who with Ser geant Wickham went to Prairie City yesterday morning, will return to Baker this afternoon at 4 o'clock and will be here until 10:35 p. m., when he will leave for Ontario.
