LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER PAGE NINE r AUGUST 7-12TH BUYERS WEEK SEA PORTLAND SENDS OUT INSTRUC TIONS ' Anticipated La Grande Will Have Big Showing That Week La Grande always takes advantage of the annual Buyers' week in Port land to not only make stated trips to Portland but get the liberal discounts on goods shipped out. August 7th to 12 are the dates of this year's week, and while no check is obtainable in the city to date ,it is presumed that .all the larger firms will) have repre sentatives on hand. 'The Trade & Commerce bureau of the Portland Chamber of Commerce is distributing -accurate and painstaking information as to how to utilize the benefits to bo bad. Several La Grande people have already received this information. Here is the gist of it: The entire week from Monday, August 7th, to Saturday, August 12th, has been set aside, by Portland Job bers and Manufacturers to meet buy ers from all parts of the Pacific northwest. This well established event offers an unusually splendid opportunity for in spection of enormous stocks and com ing in close contact with the whole salers with whom the retail merchant deals. In many lines, the largest and most complete stocks on the Pacific coast will be found in Portland, Ore gon. It is the desire of the jobbers and manufacturers' official organization, the Portland Chamber of Commerce, to make this Fourth Annual Buyers' Week eclipse all others. Your visit will be both pleasurable and profit able. Ask any previous attendant regard ing the value of Buyers' Week from a business and social standpoint. Your Railroad Fare Refunded Your railroad fare Tefunded, pro--vided you take a receipt from the Ticket Agent, and provided same is purchased strictly according to in structions of, this circular under "how and when to purchase tickets." Don't fail to take a receipt for amounts spent for railroad fare. Rail road fare refund is based on one and one-third rate to one visiting buyer from each store who places orders ag gregating not less than $500 with job bers and manufacturers who are par ticipating in this invitation. Co., in accordance with its previous policy will operate a special train excursion to Seashore points. This will be the seventh an nual event, which has in former years proven such an attraction. The special train will be equipped with Pullman standard and tourist sleeping cars and coaches and will leave La Grande nt 0:50 P. M. Wed nesday, August 9th, arriving at Port land following morning at 7:30. The palatial steamer "Hassalo" will leave Portland at 8:40 a. m. Passengers may breakfast aboard the boat, all meals being served on the a la carte plan, at popular prices, t No stops will be made between Portland and Meglar, the first bench point. The trip down the Columbia river in day light is a big attraction. The stvum er "T. J. Potter" leaves Portland at 0:00 p. m. same date, The round trip fare fiom l.a Grande is $10.10 and tickets are good for two weeks, or until August 2fith and will permit of stop overs at all points on the return trip. Correspondingly low fares from Wallowa branch points and east will obtain. Slow to Call Harvest Hands Topeka, Kans., July 29. Tho state employment bureau announced today that it won't call an urmy of eastern laborers to the Kansas harvest fields next summer until it has a job for every man called. The bureau will make a canvas of farmers in the spring, asking each how many men he must have. Under the present system harvest ers are sent to the farmers or calls are made for them.. The result has been that generally there is an esti I mate given out far over the number of men actually needed.
