Gwinn, who some years ago claimed La Grande as his home at which time he was in the mercantile trade, came ovor from Pendleton this morning as a sort of an advance cruard of the delegation which is to arrive from the Round-Up city tomor row. A good many from Pendleton are 'here already. gram" to endorse Hughes for Pres ident and Charles S. Whitman for governor and make plans to fuse with) the Democrats on state and national tickets this fall, at its meeting here today. There have been many indi- cations among the Progressive clubs in New York City and in the organiza tion throughout the state that George W. Perkins' so-called "delivery'' ok the Progressives to the Republicans, at Chicago and the proposed ""de livery" of them to Whitman here to day may not be countenanced. The Democratic conference, or sort of un official state convention which iwill be? held at Saratoga . early in August k expected to number many prominent Now York Progressives among Mts visitors, ' if not among its members, and Bainbridge Colby of New YorU. County Chairman James J. O'Connell City are here to lead today's fight, uguinst the endorsement of Hughes-, and Whitman. The fight in favor of' endorsing the pair will be led today by George W. Perkins, William H. Hotchkiss, William Ilamlin Childs,,. and Horace S.' Wilkinson. The meet ing is expected to be one of th live liest political lights New York hfl seen in many a day. Should the' .' Moose fuse with the Democrats on a state ticket this fall, it is not con sidered unlikely that they will have as a candidate for governor Judge Samuel Soabury of the Court of Ap peals. This is problematical and , purely speculative at this early date, however, of course. ' . . .. W, F. Koontz, a locomotive engi neer who lived in La Grande a good many years ago, is here from his 'home in Marshalltown, Iowa, on a vis it of a couple of weeks. In 1897 he left I.a Grande for the east on a leave of absence, and this proved to bo his farewell to the engine cab as he never returned to railroad work from that day to this. He ran a big farm a couple of years but finally disposed of 'his farminir interest and lately has just been traveling around. This is his first return trip in nearly 20 yeaTS NEW YORK MOOSE PEEVED.
