Big Salmon Running in Catherine
Creek but Fairly Safe Yet.

hunts Saturday and Sunday. Out of
a half dozen auto loads tabulated, a
fair average is struck as some got the
limit while others got none. None
went and came without excitement for
rattle snakes are thick as flees in the
Telocaset country. This uniform ap
pearance of rattlers in Oregon when
snake bite is hard to get, is unex
plained but a fact it seems. Interior
Oregon reports plenty rattlers this
year.
C. O. Ramsey was telling some
companion hunters while in quest of
sage 'bens near Telocaset, that he
would like to see a real sure enough
rattler some time and he had his wish
fulfilled instantly thereafter. Some
of the snakes killed by that party
measured about 40 inches long.

Salmon are running in Catherine
!ciek. It was generally thought that

; sport, and it is really but yesterday
: one fine fellow was pulled out by an
' up-creek resident. Nate Zweifcl had
i his gig in the Heck of a monster but
. the current is so swift that he couldn't
j hold it. iL. M. Hoyt and others were
! ready to hai-poon the monster but he
I got away. Several minutes later Rol
I Baker saw the badly wounded fish
j headed up stream but it was gone for
i keeps. Catherine creek .unquestion-
j amy has as many salmon m its waters
i this year as last, and at the rate the
! stream has been going down, it will
e a nice time to go a week hence.
The one caught yesterday measured
about ,M inches. While salmon prom
i.se to be plentiful, trout are as scarce
as hen's tneth there being about as
many fishermen on Sundays as there'
are fish.

Bought Farm Laitdn.
S. A. and Ben Cotter ihave .become
considerable farmers in tho Zumwalt
district, having Acquired 680 acres
there during tho last week. The land
consists of 200 acres bought of Len
Zumwalt; 210 from William Decour
ccy; HO from Nelson DeCourcey;
and IliO from E. F. Sargeant.
Half of this is plow land. All is
well watered, making it advantag
eous for home and for stock. Tho
new proprietors expect to breuk tho
plow land as nipidly as convenient
and put in a crop. All the farm land
was acquired by trades, largely for
town property.
Farmers Have Phone Line.,
Fifteen fanners on the road to the
Buttes have organized the O. K. Tele
phone association, and nre putting in
a new lino which runs into tho Enter
prise exchange. They have 24 miles
of wire, S. M. Lovell taking it out
last Friday. This will bo' strung on
the poles of the Home Independent
telephone company's Imiuihu line, go
ing out as far as thte top of East Crow
Creek.

Bring Car of Hogs,
North end farmers delivered a car
load of hogs for shipment to Portland
last Satunlay. The growers were Al
Nodrow. Oscar Kndmer. Albert Wil
son, C K. Kuhn, Henndrickson Broth
ers, Eddie Garrett. "Badly" ljoocke
and Mr. Graham. They took Iwick a
large quantity of freight of all kinds.
Pnlouse Man Invests.
M. J. Cunningham, of Pnlouse, Wn.,
bought the John llul or ranch of .'St'O
lu-res. near Wallowa, this weok and
will become a resident of Wallowa
county September 1. Mr. Cunning
ham, accompanied by his fathvr mid
several friends, drove through in an
automobile nnd spent a week looking
ever Wallowa county. They were all
so well impressed with the country

There is a general impression tlmt
winter wheat is not quite up to aver
age, but bhiat spring wheat is un
usually good. Last fall was cold and
dry and seeding was done with dif
ficulty. Tho grain dme up late in f Switlhdn's
the spring and then grew slowly and
uncertainty, owing to the repented
storms, with frequent heavy frosts.
Wheat was struggling and thin and
very spotted.
The generous rains of the latter
half in June brought, this winter
grain ouC wonderfully, many fields
stooling so well as to give every
promise of a lnree vX'U and growth
since has been rapid. In many fields,
however, the wecvls got the jump on
the grain, nnd in others the wheat is
still uneven. So there will be all
kinds of winter wheat, some very fine,
some fair and some poor.
Spring grain, .however, is uniformly
good. It was just ready to start in
earnest vhn the June rams felt, and
has been coming on at a great rate
since then. It is of excellent color,
genorally stands even, and of fuir
height. Tho prespect is that the
straw growth of all grain will be less
luxuriant than in the last preceding
years. This should bring compensa
tion in thw way of superior kernels of
grain. When the grain grows to
rank, the kernels sometimes do not fill

Salesman Sends Orders by Pigeons.
Cleveland, July 15. Weary of hav
ing his orders delayed by wire and
slowed by mail service, George E.
Snedden, salesman for a Cleveland
firm, bought some carrier pigeons
which have done so well that his firm
has just instituted a statewide sys
tem of carrier pigeon communication
among all its salesmen.
