PLAN FOR BIG SHOW! N6 AT CONVENTION
With the supreme convention of
Knights of Pythias which meets nt
Portland, but u few weeks away, La
Grande, Union, Elgin, Wallowa and
Enterprise lodges of that order are
fast rounding up details looking to
ward the most pretentious showing
of any section of the Northwest out
side of Portland at the big show early
in August. That a band consisting of
La Grande, Elgin, Union and Enter
prise musicians who are Knights will
be sent down to Portland, and that a
special train will be provided with all
the luxury that the O.-W. can muster
for Eastern Oregon Knights, is now
almost an assured fact. In the big
parade in Portland, each lodge from
this district will have inarching clubs,
carrying banners advertising this dis-
tnct union and Wallowa counties
and the band of some 20 pieces, will
be its head.
Union Woman Presides.
La Granae and 'Onion county has
special interest in the Pythian su
preme convention which meets at the
same time. Mrs. Marian Davis of
Union is the supreme officer of the
world for Pythian sisters, nnd she will
preside at. that convention which
meets at the same time the Knights
do.

Supreme Lodge of the order holds its
biennial session will be:
A trip over the famous Columbia
river highway.
A trip through the Columbia
gorge by boat.
A sulmon dinner out of doors.
A clam bake on the ocean beach.
The Supreme Chancellor's ball.
A night at The Oaks, with pyro-
tocnnic aispiay.
A council fire on Council Crest.
The greatest fraternal parade ever
made by one fraternity on the Pa
cific coast.
Two public receptions.
Surf bathing at the beach.
And auto trips through the most
magnificent scenery in America.
Portland is sparing no expense to
make this the most memorable ses
sion in the history of the Order of
Knights of Pythias. It is the first
time the highest division of the fra
ternity has ever come to the North
west, and it is the time of all times
for all sections of the district to make
an impression that will produce de
velopment luter.
Press Club Keeps Open.
As indicating the character of hos
pitality thut is to be on tap in Oregon
during the time of the conventions
of the Supreme Lodge and the Su
preme Temple the Portland Press
club has sent out word that it will
keep open house for all visiting
Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sis
ters between August 1 and 10. Its
writing rooms, its library and the
conveniences of a. large assembly
room are to be at the command of in
dividual members, or committees.
The. Press club never closes its
rooms at Portland. Its members are
mostly newspaper men, a portion of
whom work at night, and it is a rule
that their club home shall be open at
all times to receive the weary news
gathoTer.
As a social organization it occupies
a unique place in tho city. Its "high
jinks" are always attended by hun
dreds of the most prominent men of
the state of Oregon. Just recently
th; club had the liili candidates for
county oflices at Portland on tho car
pet and grilled them without mercy.
When the Supreme Representatives
arrive in Portland it is probable that
the Press club will have something ar
ranged by which the common, ordin
ary, subordinate lodge man can see
the starch taken out of their dignity.
New Features in Purade.
The parade committee is positive
that, they will pull otT an unusually
interesting stunt when the pageant
starts down the street. The program
committee is constantly adding new
features to the list of daily events, so
that every person in attendance will
have something to look forward to,
even though they are not members of
the Supreme Lodge. In this respect
Portland hopes to exceed any other
city where these bodies have met.
MusseLs at Sea Dinner.
A section of the big sea food dinner
at Seaside will be devoted to mussels.
They grow nowhere else as they do
at Seasido and are a distinct delicacy.
In fact the Knights at Astoria are
herding and feeding oysters, clams,
mussels nnd salmon to get them into
prime condition for the big frolic on
the beach.
Distinguished Speaker Coming.
On the night of August 2 Walter B.
.Ritchie of Lima, Ohio, will deliver his
famous address on "Friendship" at
Portland, Oregon.
Mr. Ritchie is coming to Portland
for the express purpose of speaking
his wonderful message of cheer to the
Knights of the West and Northwest,
and the largest auditorium in Port
land has been engaged for tho accom
modation of, the crowd that is expected.

It is a lecture that hus been dedicat
ed to the work of the order of
Knights of Pythias, and its author has
ret used big money to place it on the
Chautauqua circuits. No admission
chaige will be made to hear it.
Get Tickets to Seaside.
Here is some speciul advice:
First they should purchase railroad
tickets to Seaside, Oregon, when the
great clam bake is to be held August
5 and 6. Remembering that point
will save each visitor $3.00.
Second, every visitor should put a
bathing suit in his or her grip sack.
It will be wanted when the 30,000 peo
ple who gather at the beach takes a
unanimous plunge into the Pacific
Ocean.
"There has been no change in the
styles of clams and crabs that will
be used at the big feed on the beach,"
said Chairman Gus Moser, "but in
bathing suits Dame Fashion has been
setting a fast pace. That fact sug
gests the two reasons why visitors
should bring such a garment along.
"It will not take much room in the
grip, and the wearer can secure the
style that is approved by his or her
own conscience."
Pythians Entertaining Too.
Portland Pythians are preparing to
give their visitors the greatest Hne
of entertainment that has ever been
experienced by the representatives to
the Supreme Ixdge, and it will be just
as enjoyable for the lay member of
the fraternity. t
Portland invites every memuer or.
the order in the West and Northwest
to brim? his family to "The Rose
City" and spend the summer midst
the joys of nature.
Portlund, uregon, is getting i-eaay
to "doll un" acain. Portland will be
decorated from the water front to the
hills in red. yellow nnd blue, not the
least portion of which will consist of
flowers, rortiana nas ouu mnes oi
rose hedges from which to cull her
decorations, and which are at the dis
posal of visitors. Portland women
even suddIv their visitors with gloves
and shears, as well as the rose bushes
to work from.
It is expected thut 25,000 Knights
of Pythias will auenu me convention.
The large portion of visitors will be
subordinate lodge members who will
be taking their vacations from busi
ness. For the entire crowd an elab
orate entertainment has been pre
pared. Special trains will begin arriving in
Portland about July 30. These will
be carrying Eastern people. Other
sections of the Northwest will arrive
by special trains in the following two
days. Headquarters for the officers
of the Supreme Lodge will be at the
Hotel Portland, while sessions of that
body will be held in the Masonic
Temple. The great State Armory,
where 1000 men march and counter
march in comfort, will be the scene of
the public receptions.
Special committees will meet all
trains and secure hotel accommoda
tions for all visitors.
Auto owners are being urged to
drive through to Portland. The trip
will bo delightful, nnd the machine
will be handy in making trips over the
wonderful scenic boulevards which
Portland has just completed.
