The Union County Pioneer associa
tion was organized at Union on the
24th day of May, 1890, and the re
union to he held at Riverside park on
Monday, July 3rd, will he the 27th
annual meeting of the association.
The following were ihe officers elect
ed at the first meeting: General J.
II. Stevens, President; E. S. MoCom
us, secretary; Ben Brown, treasurer,
all of whom are deceased.
It was decided that all those who
settled in Union county prior to Jan.
1, 1870, should be eligible to member
ship. Later the requirements were
so modified as to permit tho enroll
ment of members in the county prior
to 1875.
With this liberal allowance for
eligibility the first roll of member
ship contained !M3 names, a consider
able number of whom were designated
as "native born." They were the chil
dren of the pioneers. Still out of the
first list of nearly 350, 2G years ago,
204 are dead and the remainder but
little more than a third of the original
number are still living.
lit will thus be seen that while
there still remains a substantial mim
ler of those who were among the
early settlers of Grande Ronde the list
is growing smaller year by year and
the time to show honor and apprecia
tion of those remaining is now.

I. I). Haines, an old pioneer and
attorney of Baker county, died Sat
urday. Mrs. R. E. Wilklow, recently of the
Union public school, passed through
La Grande yesterday en route to Alas
ka, where she goes to accept a posi
tion in the Indian training school in
charge of Dr. Jackson, of the Presby
terian mission.
A cement walk is in course of con
struction around the Foley hotel. It
is being laid in sections after the
Mosaic style.

Eli Risen was shot and instantly
killed by James Palmer in the streets
of La Grande about 1 o'clock Sunday
morning. Jealousy was undoubtedly
the cause of the deed. .
The death of Henry Anson occurred
early Wednesday morning after a
protracted illness covering a period of
about a year.
The third annual meeting of the
Union county pioneers was held at
Elgin Friday, and the event was one
not soon to be forgotten. The elec
tion of officers resulted as follows:

Runaway Injures Mayor.
Canyon City, Or., June 22. The
gasoline road roller, used in the im
provement work on Main street here,
frightened a team driven by Major
L. Woldenberg, Tuesday, causing a
runaway. The team ran into a post,
breaking the tongue and throwing
Mr. Woldenberg out of the vehicle,
which ran over him. He suffered
painful bruises.
City Hall Plan Vetoed.
Albany, Or., June 22 Mayor L.
M. Curl, of this city, vetoed the or
dinance passed by the city council at
the last meeting providing for the
conversion of the old Central school
building into a city hall. The mayor
does not think it practicable nor
profitable to remodel a building of
the character of the old schoolhouse
and believes the grounds should be
kept for' park purposes.
