tion" and presented one of the most
stubborn resistances to a La Grande
victory that has been witnessed in
years. In spite of the dust storm, the
two teams and a few spectators wit
nessed a battle-royal pitchers tussle.
For seven innings tho two teams
struggled to a scoreless fight although
both aggregations had runners thrown
out at the plate on close decisions re
peatedly. In the last of the seventh
Wnlden went safe on Oliver's
'boot and scored third when Chil
lers poked out his second clean hit of
the day. Imbler rang the boll twice
:in the next inning when Boll started
a rally. Bell himself was thrown out
:at the plate by a quick throw from

was sent home by Dan Cortklin's sub
stantial whack that also put Berry

The pitching staffs were the chief
attractions. Jeff iBell whiffed 15 men

strike-outs for the day we guess. Boll
allowed three hits in the 10 innings.
.Festivities took a recess in tho begin
ning of the extra canto when Imbler
filibustered over somo of Umpire
Pennywell's decisions. After pro
longed debate a compromise was
struck, Anderson taking the balls and
strike arbitration job and Pcnnywell
retiring. The gamo then proceeded
' until the big bust-up came. Copious
errors cropped into the game but for
nil that it was a better affair than
I the gilt-edge show with Elgin a few
weeks back. Seldom has a better
I pitching duel been fought here. In
l some ways Bell had the bulge on

weakened perceptably, his teammates
! stiffened their defense and saved the
day. Imblcr's ballteam is a hard one
to beat for they persist to the end.
Jeff had good luck with his breaks and
i pitched one of the best games of his
career, which also did "Heck." With
jout a doubt, it was a real ball game.

A big majority of the hingles that
were poled out by Imbler went into
McLean's territory and the new man
behaved very creditably.
"Perec" Childers has never been
recognized as a Ty Cobb or a Trip
Speaker, exactly, but he sure had Jeff
Bell's number yesterday. The first
time up ho threw his bat at nn offer
ing and the bingle so surprised the
Imbler infield that he went safe on
it; the next time he singled, going to
second on the play; the third timj ha
drove a hard one to tho outfield and
the last time flew out to center field.

Good Game at Elgin. '
Elgin, June 5. (Special) Cove
and Elgin had a splendid game here
yesterday the score being one all at
the opening of the ninth inning, when
Elgin put across the winning run. The
game was a hummer from start to
finish. Blumenstein and Alexander
were the pitchers.
Ken Bartlett, formor La Grande boy
now of Oregon, qualified. further Sat
urday as an athlete by taking second
place in the discuss at the conference
gyms at Pullman in which his school
won first place.

The city is calling attention to the
fact that certain streets are to be va

petition at the July meeting of the
city council, says the Union Republi

Seized Liquors Are Returned.
Seattle, Wash., June 3. Five
truckloads of wine and whisky seized
by the police May 12, when the Char
tier drug store in the Savoy hotel
building was raided, were ordered re
turned to the drug store vesterday
by Police Judge John Bordon. Tho
order was issued when it was shown
that the liquor had been purchased
before the prohibition law went into
cttect January 1, and had been dis
tributed only in the manner prescribed,
by law. The court also dismissed
charges of unlawfully having liquor
in their possession tiled aganist J. C.
Chartier, proprietor of the drug store,
and W. G. King, manager of the ho
tel... This is the first instance of a
large amount of liquor having been
returned to the owners, since the po
lice began their crusade against drug
stores alleged to tie selling liquor in
violation of law.
