Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Davis expect

Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Erwin, of Col
fr.x, Washington, arrived in the city
Saturday last on a visit to their son
Dr. C. W. Erwin and family, and ex
pect to remain two or three weeks.
Miss Luvia Spray, has taken a posi
tion in the offico of the Homo Inde
pendent Telephone Co., in Union

A. Bidwell and Arthur Miller ar
rived home Monday morning from an
extended trin to Salmon River Valley
in Idaho. They were highly impres
sed with the new territory and speak
of it in glowing terms. Good water,
a healtnlut climate and iertue sou.

building of a great territory.
W. Halsey, manager cf the Union
Creamery has received a shipment
of a thousand day-old chicks, from
Grimes of The Dalles. They arrived
here in fairly good shape except the
loss of about sixty. . They are of the
white leghorn variety. '

ley's well-known farmers was in Un
ion on business Wednesday.
George Hcmpe a well known Union
boy has bought a fine stock farm near
Keatinir. in Baker county, lne iarm
consists of 320 acres and has a hun
dred acres in alfalfa. From reports
it was a groat buy. George will move
to the farm at once and union will
lose a splendid fnmily for good.
Mrs. O. J. Skiff left Thursday, for
North Powder where sho will remain
several months. Mrs.' Skiff suffers
from bay fever and the change of
climate is necessary.

Prairie City.
Leonard Adams returned the fore
part of the week from a business visit

F. Slack was among the Summer
ville business visitors in Elgin Sat
urday, remaining here until Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Thelbert Choate were
down from Summerville Sunday and
spent the day at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Jas Llliott.

Julius Sommer came out from Wal

farm homo of Mr. and Mrs. W. U.
Hill just smith of town.
Jas. Hallgarth and Dorse Barnes
made a trip to La Grande the latter
part of last week, on their motorcycles
and while there the latter trailed nis
machine for another.

interests of his candidacy.
Wm. Arnold, former well known
stage driver now employed in the log
ing camp of the G. K. L. Co., at Cabin
Creek, came up Saturday afternoon
and visited until Sunday with his
family.
Reports from the various farming
sections surrounding Elgin indicate
that winter wheat is looking good and
growing in . a , satisfactory condition.
The acreage is considerably less this
year than last.
iMrs. L. S. Chapman and daughter
arrived Saturday from McMinnville to
join the husband and father here,
who is pastor of the M. E. church,
and who met them in La Grande, The
son will not arrive until after the
close of school at McMinnville.
While in town Monday, Ray Brown
reported that J. L. Hindman and fam
ily would not letu-n from Riverside.
Cal., before the middle of this month
and probably not until later. He stat
ed that Mr. Hindman had been surTe!--
ing with a severe cold.
R. A. Ohms received a postal can!
Monday from his brother, Alvin, who
left last Monday with the party of El
gin people for Catlo valley, going
overland. He states that they 'had ar
rived at Nyssa, that is his outfit and
that of Otto Klinghammer, the other
members being behind.
Lewis E. Reese, resident of Oak
Grove, this state, was here during the
week looking after his farming inter
ests. He owns the farm which .las.
Parsons had leased for a number of
years and which is familiarly known
as the Andy Thompson ranch. Mr.
Reese makes teaching his profession
and may decide to move to Elgin in
the near future.
Joe 'Buell left Tuesday evening for
the Weiser, Idaho section, to look over
farm lands with a view of locating.
Mrs. J. H. Keeney arrived Monday
from La Grande for a visit with Elgin
friends and relatives. She was ac
comnanied by her youngest son.
Giles Plnss, former well known
sawmill man of this city now Tesiding
in Wallowa, passed through here
Monday morning en route home from
a visit in ta Grande and with his par
ents at Alicol.
Ray Knight and Car! Koelor were
both in town Saturday securing mod
icat attention for injured left hands,
which they chopped while splitting
wood. Both will" be laid up for "several
days yet.

J. F. Bater was a passenger on the
outgoing train Tuesday evening en
route to La Grande, vhere ho attended
a communcation of Royal Arch Com -mandry

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Baird drove down
from aL Grande last Friday and vis
ited briefly with Elgin friends. They
were accoinpr.nicd on their return by
Mrs. Millio Korns.
Columbus Fisher, who has been a
regular member of the force in tho
plant of the Elgin Flour Milling Co.,
nas leased his father's farm north of
Summerville and ho and his wife are
now living on the same.
E..H. Flagg, who was publisher of
The Recorder for about three years
and who is now editing a paper at
Warrenton. Clatsop county, is a can-
didato for the Republican nomination
for representative to the legislature
from that county.
Wm. Winn, Mrs. Mary Young and
Miss Ilene Hotchkiss autoed to La
Grande Sunday and report a pleasant
drive.. They were accompanied home
by Mrs. Millie Korns, who had been a
guest of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Baird.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Howard returned
Sunday evening to La Grande, after
a visit in this city at the homo of Mrs.
Howa.d's parents, Mr, and Mrs. J. C.
Hug. Mrs. Howard visited here sev
eral days, her husband coming down
Sunday morning.
Jas. Tibbetts, who for the past sev
eral years has been a resident of El
gin, left Sunday evening for points in
Washington, in which state he ex
pects to locate permanently if a suit
able location can be found. His
mother will join him at a later date.
Mr. and Mrs. Matt Boswell of Min
am, visited in Elgin over Wednesday.
Ed Geckler. well known farmer of
the Flat, is the proud possessor of a
new Overland.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Shockley went to
Enterprise this morning and expect
to return to Elgin the fore part of
next week.
Mrs. Chas. Stoop returned to La
Grande the fore part of the week,
after a visit at the home of her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Weiss, and
with other 'relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Payne, who have
been making their home in Elgin for
the past several months, left yester
day evening for Los Angeles, from
which place they will select a perman
ent location. En route they wi visit
at tho home of their son, Dell, in
Portland.
Dave Zweifel left Tuesday evening
for Riverside, Ore., from which place
he will stage it to Catlo valley and in
spect lands with a view of locating a
homestead. Dave said he had not ac
quired Catlo valley fever but would
take advantage of his present lay-off
to look over that section.
Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Chandler, to
gether with Mr. and Mrs. Clifford and
Sir. and Mrs. Hanson left Saturday
for Weiser, Idaho, where they have
purchased land and will make their
future home. These families have
been well known residents of the Flat,
and have many friends who regret to
see them go.

amount of lumber produced, Oregon

half of the building material, of the
lath and of the shingles, is used in
Multnomah and Clackamas counties.
